You could very well be right but I will do anything to not have another one of those. Worst pain I ever had to endure for a extended amount of time. Just relaying what he told me to do and what researching the internet on the subject said as well. If I get another due to shaving will never touch it with razor again in my lifetime.

Shaving that area just seems like a bad idea because your chances of having an ingrown hair go up a dramatically.
I had my first one years ago and they told me I needed to keep shaving it, which was impractical, especially since I was a 19 in college with no GF. For about a week I had home health nurses shave the area. Fast forward to now, its back and I really dont want to deal with this shite.

Best thing I did was get it lanced first. I don't know if an ER will do it, but a General Surgeon can do it in his office. Hurts like hell even with a numbing injection, but you'll start feeling better after a day. Get ready for lots of crying in the shower with blood running down your legs after surgery, kind of like a rape victim. I didn't really shave like they said, but packed and repacked the site with gauze religiously which sucks because for the first few weeks you're basically ripping out a scab each time.

Had surgery to remove mine in Dec 2011. Hasn't bothered me since. Had it for a few years and after the last flare up I had enough. I was worried about having surgery because a lot of things I read said they had to leave it open. Well the doctor I went to said he could close it up and he did. Very minimal pain because I pretty much just laid around all day. It wasn't really draining the way I thought a surgical wound would. Turns out the only opening was at the top and the first time I truly sat down on a hard surface(The seat of my truck), it decided to drain gallons of gooiness all over my seat.

Congrats. I hate to say it but the fun is just now starting. The healing process is slow and painful. As many have said, it has to heal from the inside out and that takes a long time. I stuffed mine with gauze as directed and still had to reopen it because it closed too soon. Pulling the gauze out after it's dried and stuck is about as much pain as you can have. Glad to know I'm not alone in my experience. And....mine has not given me any problems since it healed. It was about 20 yrs ago.

I never heard of these cysts until I read about them on the OT last year. Ever since then I've been terrified. Something about your tailbone piercing your skin, and then you having 2 epidermal layers with the inner one growing hair inside your body?

Have it as well, Only way to get rid of it is to have surgery to remove it.

These things are awful! I had one about 8 years ago. Couldn't sit or even lay comfortably. Went to the ER before a head developed, the Dr. told me it may be authritis. After a couple more days, I can finally feel a head, so I went back to the ER. Got it cut and stuffed with gauze, man that was 10 tons of relief. It came back a year later, and it didn't hurt as much, but it was uncomfortable. So I waited for it to pop. After, I went to the ER and they finally cut the whole thing out. Haven't had one since. They will stuff you with gauze. You've gotta change it constantly. It has to heal from the inside before you let the hole close back up again. If the hole closes before, then you have to go get cut again.
