And you're acting like it is a given that legal Hispanics will vote as a bloc for Democrats going forward.
It definitely is. Tell me what the GOP is doing to change the trend??

Like what ? Gay marriage ? Exit polls showed a majority of Hispanics supporting gay marriage. Their numbers were higher than non hispanic whites or blacks.
Nearly 85% of Hispanics voted FOR prop 8 here in California. Are those the same exit polls that leave out a bunch of conservative states?

As the Hispanic population grows over the next decade, the Hispanic share of eligible voters certainly should grow, but perhaps not by enough to permit a Democratic victory in a competitive election. One analysis by David Broockman of Yale University projects that the Hispanic share of Texas’ voting age population will increase to the magic 37 percent in 2024, but the Hispanic share of the voting eligible population will probably be even lower, since millions of voting-age Texas Hispanics won’t be citizens. The most recent American Community Survey shows that while 31 percent of voting-age Texans are Hispanic, just 26 percent of voting eligible Texans are Hispanic. If the same proportion holds in 2024, as few as 30 percent of Texas Hispanics might be eligible to vote--although the eventual figure will prove higher since a greater share of Texas Hispanics will probably be U.S. Citizens. Even so, it will be difficult for Democrats to win Texas if Hispanics represent about one-third of the electorate unless Democrats do even better among Texas Latinos than Obama did in 2008, or make gains among white voters. Both are possible. More likely, the Hispanic share of the voting eligible population won't reach the magic number until 2028. Even when the Hispanic share of eligible voters reaches the tipping point, it will be difficult for Democrats to turn opportunity into reality. Most of the growth in the Hispanic share of eligible voters comes from Hispanic children reaching voting age, but young voters are less likely to turn out than older voters, who happen to be white.

I was wrong. Blacks voted about 80-20, I read the table wrong. Latinos voted 65-35 against.

Conservatives may have another problem wooing Hispanic voters.
quote:
Latino voters are more likely than the electorate in general to support gay marriage, according to exit polls reported by ABC News. The change, which other polling has tracked over the last year, indicates that the fast-growing Latino population may play a pivotal role in expanding gay marriage across the country. According to ABC: Nearly six-in-ten Latino voters (59%) said their state should legally recognize same-sex marriage while 32% said their state should not. But among all voters, about half (48%) favored legalization of gay marriage while nearly the same share said they would oppose it (47%). Non-Hispanic whites were the most opposed to states legally sanctioning same-sex marriage (47% favored but 50% were opposed).
You shouldn't dispute my knowledge on this issue. I know my shite when it comes to this. LINK

So the Democrats plan to attract Hispanics by stirring them up over social issues? No one is surprised by this.

I don't want the republicans to "woo" anyone. If a person shares the ideology the republican party offers, then welcome. If he or she doesn't, well, there are other parties out there.

What table are you reading ? Anyway, that was FOUR YEARS AGO. Do you have any idea how much of a shift has occurred on this issue in just the past four years? I'm quite confident if Prop 8 were voted on today it would be defeated. And if the SCOTUS does not strike down Prop 8, it is 100% certain that a repeal referendum will be on the ballot. The California legislature has already indicated they will put a repeal on the ballot.

Deep down, many of those who claimed they support it, probably don't. It is really tough to be an anti-gay marriage democrat.

I would argue that it's much tougher being a pro marriage equality Republican. NOM always threatens to primary any Republican that votes to legalize.

It will result in more lost elections. But, to me, that is OK. Principles are more important than party. As they say, politics is the second oldest profession, and it bears a striking resemblance with the first.
