Whiskey Advocate confirmed the rumors this week.

Diageo, a large corporation that owns many brands, has bought the property and plans to re-open the distillery. What is not known yet is exactly what they will be doing with it. Julian Van Winkle is working with Buffalo Trace to produce PVW now and it's fairly unlikely they'll move the operation again unless it's just more of a collaboration. There are reports that there is still some stock of old Stitzel-Weller product at the distillery that could be bottled by the new company as very limited (very expensive and very old) bourbon. As for the future, Who knows if they're just going to distill Bulleit (Diageo's one bourbon) there or try some new things, but it should be interesting nonetheless.

If you're curious, here's a link to the current whiskey brands owned by Diageo (mostly scotch).

I think it's good to re-open the distillery especially b/c of the history. My only concern is they make it into some sort over technology driven factory.

From a blogger regarding the new activity at Stitzel-Weller:

"Rumors of life at the distillery started last weekend when several prominent whiskey bloggers, broke the news. The Whisky Aficionado Spectator Blog reported that the reanimation had been accomplished through "some combination of radioactive spiders, frog dna, gamma rays and lightening." Several hours after a freak lightening storm, locals told of a bearded man with a cigar seen ambling around the distillery grounds shouting "Brains, brains! But always fine brains!"
