What's your address. I'll come to your house and discuss this in person with you. My point here is that you are defenseless in your own home. You could not protect yourself or family from an armed intruder. You would have to call 911 and hope the armed police officers get there in time to save you. Think about this for a while.

You're being disingenuous and you should know it. I'm not one of the guys that think criminals are only black. In fact, no one actually thinks so if pressed on the issue. But that's the first thing some people think.

You just said so. You automatically assume when someone says "criminal element" they are talking about a black person. You live in New Orleans right? In that case, you'd actually be correct the majority of the time since an overwhelming percentage of crime is involved with the black population, but typically black on black.

No. I "said" (or, rather, the point of the satirical statement) that many rabid gun owners think of criminals as being black (I am not saying being a gun owner means you think black people are criminals . . . just means that some gun owners think so . . . )

I hate to address this molehill that has been transformed into a mountain, but you two do realize that the statement I made was intended to be in the voice of the people I was referring to, correct? Not my belief. I'm not that concerned about what you may believe about me, but I am concerned that you at least understand the point of the post, whether it's outrageous to you or not.

Don't talk to me about blacks, their rights, and how they were treated. Whether the Constitution outlined it or not (and it didn't), the rights minorities fought well over 100 years after the Constitution was written, those were inalienable human rights. Now whether you agreed with that or not doesn't compute. You are comparing a Constitutional right (gun ownership) to something far greater. That's a mistake.
Not being black, I am sure I don't fully comprehend the visceral effect that the first 100 years of constitutional government had on blacks. There is nobody alive today who would argue that the original constitution was not perfect in that respect. Trying to be logical here as best I can ---> The fact it was not perfect in today's sense does not mean it was flawed in it's origination. The original constitution had to deal with the reality of the times in which it was generated. There was 'curious institution' of slavery in America. There choices was to not have a constitution at all, or to accommodate the slave-holding regions. Just as we had to ally with Stalin in order to win WWII, the constitution had to be acceptable to the slave-holding regions. This did not mean the fledgling US was an advocate for slavery - it tolerated slavery to accomplish a larger goal. Yes - it took 100 years to finally rid us of slavery. In a perfect world it would have happened sooner - or never have been instituted in the first place. We didn't live in a perfect world then - nor do we have a perfect world now. I do believe that if I were black - today I would be extremely proud of that heritage if I was a descendent of an actual slave from the early years of our nation. If I was a black person with no lineage that went back to that era, I'm not sure I would have any more than a passing interest in the historical significance of the era. Serious question - are you a descendent of an American slave?

We, as human beings, have certain inalienable rights. Those transcend Sharia law, English laws, and as much as some of you hate to admit, American laws, ergo the Constitution.
Actually, the U.S. Constitution, as amended, does exactly this - the Constitution does not confer any rights, but reaffirms those natural rights. While the document remains imperfect, it is as good an attempt in human history.

Preaching to the choir here - all I ask of black people today (who suffer from NONE of the direct horrors of slavery, and while I recognize the residual effects, blacks today have more power today to make their situation better than whites do, particularly the large populations in America's urban centers, which are largely governed by black political leadership - for all the good it does), is to recognize how difficult a question it was and how many of the founders who were slaveholders agonized and struggled with the issue at great personal and professional expense, and judge them through the prism of history.
quote:
Now whether you agreed with that or not doesn't compute. You are comparing a Constitutional right (gun ownership) to something far greater. That's a mistake.
No, Ethan, that's your mistake. The inalienable natural right of self-defense is enforced through the bearing of arms. The Constitutional right is nothing of the sort - it is a Constitutional protection of the right that was already there. The 13th Amendment didn't magically free black people in the southern United States - they were already free people by natural law. The 13th (following a lot of bloodshed, no question) merely codified that freedom and gave it the force of law, Constitutional supremacy, in fact, just in case there was any residual confusion about all of that. The 2nd is no better, nor any worse than the 1st, 4th, 5th, 13th, etc.
