Ranking them for no particular reason, just for fun, and they are listed in no particular order below. The three movies I mention may not be your favorite by them, but just giving a memory refresher.

Coen Bros.
Famous movies: Fargo, No Country for Old Men, Fargo, The Big Lebowski

Martin Scorsese
Famous movies: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas

Christopher Nolan
Famous movies: Batman trilogy, Memento, Inception

Quentin Tarantino
Famous movies: Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds, Kill Bill vol.1&2

Steven Speilberg
Famous movies: Jurassic Park 1&2, Indiana Jones Trilogy (lets pretend there wasnt a 4th), Saving Private Ryan

Terrance Malick
Famous movies: Tree of Life, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line

This is almost impossible. I changed my list probably 4-5 times before hitting submit.

1. Coen Bros. They do it all, comedy, thriller, westen.

2. Scorsese. Ranking 2-4 was the hardest. I went scorsese because his top 5 films were better imo than the next two's top 5.

3. Nolan. Not that many movies under his belt, but for me,he hasnt missed.

4. Spielberg. He is ranked here because he's not been great of late, Lincoln pending. War Horse, Tintin, a turd Indiana Jones, Munich, War of the Worlds, The Terminal. I didnt like a single one of those.

5. Tarantino. Love me some QT. Limited films hurt him, and not being a big fan of Jackie Brown and Grindhouse doesnt help.

6. Malick. Cinematography... #1. But he hasnt made enough movies to be any higher. Cmon, lets get some more movies Malick.

This list is subject to change.

Go.

Coen
Scorcese
Spielberg
Nolan
Tarantino
Malick

Speilberg gets dinged for being "too commercial", which is total BS. He makes great films with a wide appeal - which is really hard.

Why do you have him that far behind?

Probably the most of any of the group. The dude will throw his name on anything though, IMDB is showing he has produced 150+ movies, good lord.

4) Scorsese

I really like all of these directors, but someone has to be on the bottom.

You didn't even put his best movie on the list.

I don't like comparing directors that write their own material and those that don't. It never feels fair either way.

This is exactly what I was going to post.

I know it was "visually great" But it was so much worse than it should have been

I'm just getting a red x but just guessing that a Prestige picture? Possibly my favorite Nolan movie, but like I said, I was just putting those in there as a refresher/their most well known films.

Most people who don't like Malick haven't seen Badlands or Days of Heaven. I'd try to see them if you can't, their not on Netflix though. But being a director who is typically the most well respected in regards to cinematography, is pretty impressive.

The New World was a pretty disappointing though. That could have been a lot better, puts me to sleep though.

I can easily see why people don't care for him though. He's different for sure.

Tarantino - He may not be the "best" in a technical sense but I've enjoyed his best more than any of the other directors best. I stutter stepped in choosing him as my number 1 only because he doesn't have as much available as the others. I couldn't find a way to fault him for that though.

Scorcese/Spielberg - I can not in good conscience pick the better out of these two. They are both legends.

Coen brothers - being number 3 on this list is not a slight against them by any means

Nolan - Makes really good movies and is probably more consistent than all of these guys but while his lows are better than theirs his highs don't reach the greatness of his peers.

Malick - while I respect his work, I still don't like it.
