Most the time it absolutely is.

Your sarcasm and cynicism aside, obviously a lot can go wrong. It's important to pick a good one if you are going to go down that road. As for the financial aspect (which is what this thread is about) there are actually a lot of advantages and economies of scale that can result in you being better off financially as two becoming one (financially) than keeping everything separate.

we pay our bills from one account and kept our separate accounts. As long as the bill account has enough money in it to pay the bills, i don't care what she spends from her own account. It eliminates us have to ask each other for money.

re: Having the "Money Talk" with the SO before marriage

This was a BIG deal for us. After we got engaged, I learned that her student loan debt was pretty substantial. It really took a toll for a while and we had to really discuss what we thought was responsible spending habits. I think that's just as important as joint or seperate checking accounts.

We keep everything seperate for the moment. She uses her money for spending money and pays whatever she has left on loans. I pay all bills and luxury type things. It works right now and is helping put a dent in her debt.

Have the talk now, and once a month to always know what's going on. It's what we try to do. Only time we argue about it is when we don't keep up with each other for a while.

Not sure anyone in their right mind would want someone with a screen name "eyepooted" to handle their money.

This talk is very important, one of my good friends recently got married and did not have this talk, he wife decided to let him know the day before the wedding that she was 15k in debt, 10k from shopping and 5k from college, and that her parents would not be covering her credit card patents after the wedding, to me this would be a deal breaker at least until this situation was resolved but the day before you are pretty much locked in, I felt very sorry for him

I don't know how you could possibly have a successful marriage without combining finances. If you're relationship isn't able to handle the money talk, you have no business getting married. And if you aren't trusting enough to share your finances, you really shouldn't be getting married.

Don't get married if you think you need to have a "money talk".
I know this is the OT and there is notoriously bad advice given, but this is the worst advice I've ever read.

You HAVE to have a money talk - personally, I think joint accounts are the way to go and that everyone knows what's going on financially. Not that my wife gives a shite or ever looks at the account, but in theory...

We have separate everything.

I pay for almost everything. She pays her car note and groceries.

We've had a joint account and a joint credit card for two years now. After we're married, we will have a joint checking account, a joint credit card, a joint savings account, individual investment/retirement accounts, and each have an individual credit card for gift purchases. I handle the budget and bill payments, but we discuss all major purchases. Works excellent for us

That's exactly how we roll.

I am coming up with a plan on what to tell the SO about the money arrangement.

As you should. Just make sure you both give input. It should not be a one-sided conversation.

How important is this little talk?

Very. Hopefully you know your spouse's habits.

re joint checking accounts good ideas(i dont think so)?

Yes, of course. As a married couple, you are joined as one. If you can't trust this person with your checking account, you may need to think twice before you marry or have children with them.

joint account for joint expenses

individual accounts for your own money.

paychecks go into individual accounts.

each person contributes equally to the joint account every pay day

works perfectly

What a sneaky bitch. But that is kinda his fault for not asking sooner.

surely if you have been with someone long enough to be getting married to them, you should pretty much have the "money" situation down? I knew my wife's spending habits and ideas about money long before I married her. Having to have a specific talk sounds like there isn't sufficient communication going on there...

easily one of the most important talks

Are joint checking accounts good ideas(i dont think so)? Can this talk work against me in the future?
We have a joint account. If we want purchase something above a certain limit we'll talk about it- obv excludes bills.

This talk will work against you in the future if y'all don't set some important guidelines down now.

I agree, but it's me that never looks at our joint accounts
