This seems sketchy to me. Maybe I'm too cynical but I don't trust an olive branch from the gun haters.

You are smart to be wary. This may be a trial balloon.
They made one significant error in their strategy, though.
By going all out and promising significant changes to gun laws, now they have to deliver something or risk being made a laughingstock.
They forgot two things: how slow politics moves and how quickly Americans lose interest in current events, even significant, tragic events.
