Anyone here ever worked for a Gamestop?

I can't think of any positive things about working for GameStop unless you really want that additional discount/check out benefit.

I noticed, from a friend, that they get a trip to Vegas yearly for convention....That's kind of a perk. Plus the starting pay is decent, 401k, Insurance etc etc...

Plus there is room for growth past the point of SM. up to DM, if i'm not mistaken.

Yeah, you can rent games for 4 days for free. What sucks as a customer, an employee can take a sealed game home, bring it back, and sell it for new, not usef. Plus, they never have any hours. I think 90 to 120 is the avg per store. So 40 for 2 managers each and the rest is split among 5 employees. And 20% discount for new games. Did it as seasonal one year in college.

I was a store manager at a Gamestop for a while before I went back to school.

Pros: If you hire a good staff, it isn't a very demanding job. You used to go to Vegas every year for the manager's conference, but you started your day at 7:30ish and didn't finish until about 8 so a lot of us stayed out late and didn't get much sleep. You are eligible for a bonus every year based on your metrics that should be worth a few grand. The pay isn't bad for a position that doesn't require a degree and isn't labor intensive. Five or six years ago, they started store managers at about $32.5k.

Cons: CUSTOMERS. If you get a customer complaint, it's a huge deal even if you were polite and followed store policy. It's frustrating having to bend over backwards for ridiculously demanding customers that just want to complain about everything. Most stores have a regular customer or two that is like this. Your job will suck if you have a bad district manager. If you can't hire a good staff, your job will suck. You can expect to be understaffed during the holidays and work long hours because you aren't given enough payroll. The day after Thanksgiving and the week of Christmas can be pretty stressful.

I definitely wouldn't want to do it again, but it wasn't a terrible job for a while. If you put in your time and do your job well, you can be promoted to district manager and bring in good money. From there, you could be promoted to regional manager and continue up the chain from there.

eta: Someone else mentioned this, but Gamestop is going to take a huge hit when most games become available only through digital download. They make the vast majority of their profits from used game sales. It wouldn't surprise me if they went out of business or at least shut down most of their stores.

I bet the stench of most of the customers makes it unbearable as well.

I was a store manager for Gamestop in Hoover when I moved there a few years back. I loved what I did, loved the customers that came in, all in all loved the job however I will touch on one thing in particular that AUDODGER hit on.

I probably had the biggest know-it-all, thick-skulled, a-hole of a district manager that I had ever seen. This guy would constantly use big words way out of context so much to the point where most of my team members would ask me WTF he was talking about. He would constantly come into the stores in the area and belittle store members IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS; this got so bad to the point where me and him went toe to toe in the backroom one day. He is the lone reason I left GS. If he wasn't such a prick I would probably still be there and probably be in an area or district position myself.
