I went to DC a year and a half ago and had a good time. But it was the least relaxing vacation I have ever been on. We did the White House, Capitol, most of the Smithsonian, all the major monuments, and Arlington National in 3 days. Arlington is a must see and I would try to get in the White House if possible.
Exactly. All that stuff is great and definitely worth seeing, but I only did it when I was in DC for another event. I would never purposely schedule a vacation there.

As for $$, my only advice is don't skimp on anything. Set a generous budget and stay within it but don't get cheap on the trip, or what's the point in going?

I'm not trying to be exactly cheap, I really just want to be budget wisely. I get what you are suggesting though too, since vacations come far and few between, no sense in being scared to open the wallet a little more than usual.
