Question about college degrees and leaving a team early to go pro

I have a question about student athletes who aren't finished with their degrees and decide to go pro.
What happens?
-Are they expected to pay tuition that they would have had covered for them if they had went to school? Or
-Are they just shown the door and get to step away without owing anything?
In my department if you leave when you aren't supposed to you must return all stipends and scholarships, e.g. pay them back the money they gave you for the semester you are missing.
This is something I've always been curious about when relating to student athletes going pro early. I understand this might be a school to school situation where different schools take different measures. Likewise, I also understand that this may be a athletic program to athletic program where programs within the same institution have different rules.

I am pretty sure athletic scholarships are on a year by year basis.

OK. That makes sense. That's all I needed to know. Thanks.

When players leave early they basically give their scholarship back to LSU. LSU in turn gives the scholarship to someone that is enrolling spring semester.

Actually, from what I understand, you can have it pulled or "not renewed" yearly. But the players I know that left early still have their scholarships honored when they come back to finish there degree. Chad Lavalier did this for sure

That's not fair. For any student.

Life is not fair. Get "fair" out your head and you will be much happier.

quote:no they didn't. When an athlete signs a pro contract they almost always include a clause that if they return to school the pro team must foot the bill for tuition.

All I know is when chad came back he was talking about being broke. I asked how he was paying for school if so broke and he told me athletics was honoring his scholarship. Not as a players scholarship but as something else

This is going to rape our APR.

Maybe he was working with the team in some sort of coaching capacity

He was working with me doing something that had nothing to do with LSU. Maybe he was working two jobs though. Idk.

How does a player leaving early affect the graduation rates?
