I'm not a teacher in EBR, but I am in another parish with almost identical pay. Of course taxes are based on the number dependents, etc., but my take-home is around $2,900. I'm married with 2 kids. After insurance, union dues, and personal retirement (which are all optional) my paycheck is $2,400 per month. Great benefits, terrible pay, you'll be working in the summer to live. Some parishes include a nice bonus on top of your regular salary. Mine was $5,000 this year. If little Bobby has it his way there won't be any public schools...

This is what I was looking for when I started the post someone with real insight because they are personally involved with this situation... hell this post might even show up on google one day.

do you feel that the retirement program is worth paying into? I know a lot has changed with that over the last few months... but i don't know specifics.

Also is your insurance for your entire family or do you elect just to have the plan for you while your SO/kids are on another plan.

This is fine. The job is for my SO. I am self employed so insurance is a killer on me..
