I'm not sure why they have this mindset. Wouldn't they rather someone buy the console even if to only play used games?

Because Sony and Microsoft sell the consoles at a loss for most of the product's life cycle.

also.. if you actually think any of the console companies are doing this because THEY want to, you are blind and ignorant..

the console creators could give 2 rats asses about DRM.. it's the game developers that are pushing the hand of the console manufacturers. I expect all of these things to be "fixable" via "software update" and after Sony (and possibly Microsoft) realize that sales are 1/100 of previous sales... they will send a software update the "fix" the system.

and the people pulling the strings (the game developers) are going to be in for an extremely rude awakening when NOBODY buys their games because of this shite, and will ask Sony (and possible Microsoft) to take it off.

The game devs make money only 1 time. When someone buys a used copy, that doesn't magically make another copy. The devs know this. I think the devs will lower game prices as a game gets older but the $60 new game price point is here to stay.

I think the better argument would be exposure. I played a used copy of Bioshock 1 to I bought Bioshock 2 new when it was released.

If Sony implements this strategy then MS will have to follow suit because devs will favor the PS4 due to it's profit potential. MS can't afford to be left out on big multi-plat titles.
