Fortress of the bear

The next island over from the one I live on is Admiralty Island. The Russians called it "fear island" and the natives called it Kootznoowoo, or "Fortress of the bear." The island is fairly large, about 1,300 sq. miles or more but has more than one bear per square mile.
PBS released a video last summer about the island and it's bears. This is the island many of us hunt, and some of of us have cabins on rare private land near Funter Bay. The only humans on this island are in the native village of Angoon, about 800 ppl and on a mine called Greens Creek, where some Juneau residents work.
Much of the island is a national monument and it's a fantastic place to hunt and fish, but is guarded heavily by the densest bear population in the world.
The video is 50 minutes, but if you like nature shows check it out.

There are people who still will not set foot on this island, no matter how big it is. It's an awesome place, but you will run into bear..it's unavoidable. It's one of the few places left on earth still ruled almost entirely by these large critters, and they can grow to over 1,000 lbs. The hunting and fishing is world class, you just have to realize what else is out there. The majority of the island, like most of SE Alaska is virtually untouched by human.

With that many bears, what do you hunt?

Mountain goats and deer. Also some fantastic fly fishing in the alpine lakes. In good weather you can kayak there from here.

Can't click the link but are these brown bears were talking about?
Are they protected? Can you defend yourself from them if necessary? What sort of precautions do you take? Sounds fascinating.

Yeah, brown bears. On the mainland in Juneau there are brown and black. Mainly black. There are three islands between us and open water we call the ABC islands of Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof. They are home to monster brown bears, the densest population of bears on the planet.
You can bear hunt there and you can protect yourself from bears as well, but you will certainly have to show just cause.
Hunting deer or goat means you can't take your time after the kill because you will have competition for the prey. We were stuck on Chichagof Island during a fall storm and had to fight off bears for everything we killed.
As far as precautions, just normal bear caution. Best deer hunting is late fall when the snows in the mountains push the deer down to the lowlands and bears are getting ready for their winter nap.

Are deer and goats prey of bears?
Or do they just scavenge on dead ones?

What kind of deer? Blacktail?

Sitka blacktail. Tiny compared to the deer in the South.
Nodust, bear live of coastal sedges, berries and salmon mainly but if they can find a fresh klll they are all over it. They will eat anything. Berries are extremely abundant and wild blueberries, salmon berries and a few others grow everywhere. These guys have no shortage of fuel.
The main video linked above shows one swimming after a moose that made the mistake of swimming across the straight and onto the island.

I wouldn't step foot on that island anymore than I would Isla Sorna.

Admiralty is the seventh largest island in the US, it's pretty big. Still, more than a bear per square mile density.
I've learned the hard way that you don't wear enticing or covering scents when deer hunting.
Baranof and Chichagof are just as infested. The mainland isn't much less, but it's primarily black bears.
You can kayak into these bays and inlets and watch them fish. They don't give a rats arse about you being there, it's pretty cool. There is also a forest service viewing platform at Pack Creek on Admiralty, about 20 miles S. of Juneau.
This guy has some nice videos taken with a gopro while using a motorized kayak on Baranof Island.
