If our GDP were to drop, would you expect the presidency to cost less?

If we had less money, I don't think we'd be able to justify some of the spending. However, we are currently the most powerful nation on the planet. Security costs and questions aside, I think it's a bit unbecoming to suggest that our President should live and present himself like those of the second-rate powers. There's something to be said for prestige when it comes to diplomacy.

I'm sure I'll get a lot of flak in here for that little comment, but it's just how the world works.

I understand your point. Appearance is important in the political world. I just think there is a difference between maintaining a powerful, wealthy appearance and spending exorbitant amounts of money on frivolous things.

They have a person on staff to take care of the dog at the cost of $100k a year, according to the article. Some aspects of it should be scaled back some.

I also disagree with the president jet setting around the country to do talk shows. That's as much of a "beneath the office" issue as a cost one for me though.

Yes, yes you probably will.

Name me one thing Obama has done to show

humility

unselfishness

Romney was most likely going to not take his POTUS 400K salary as POTUS.

Obama would never do the same even if he were a trillionaire.

I am sick to death of people dragging Bush into this.

Obama has no regards whatsoever on cutting down on spending in any way, shape or form. He is an arrogant POS.

Post evidence Obama is not a selfish elitist.

re: Obama lives better than kings

We were not in dire straits economically under Bush until the tail-end. But Bush still was not allowed to play golf, according to the media.

What I mean when I say Obama lives better than Kings; is all of the wasted money under Obama.

For starters he wastes tax payer money to pay off his campaign contributers.

If Bush did the following, would he be called an arrogant crony king? If Bush did the following what would the media do to him if he took off on lavish Hawaii mansion vacations?

If you are doing lousy as a POTUS, in which Obama most certainly is...

Lavish golf outings and vacations and spending like listed below are actions for calls for impeachment wouldn't you say? Nonetheless Obama's failures in F&F and Benghazi are corrupt at the very least.

Corrupt cronyism and failures do not deserve a Hawaii mansion when the country is on the brink of economic collapse now, does it? If Bush did the following; his head be on a platter and be called an arrogant king wasting more taxpayer money and you know it.

quote:

Pat Stryker, an Obama bundler who has donated, according to the Center For Responsive Politics, "$500,000 to Democrats over the last five years including $50,000 to President Obama's inaugural fund and $35,800 to his victory fund in 2008," was an original investor in Abound and visited the White House three times around the time the DOE loan was approved.

Abound subsequently filed for bankruptcy in June, and the government is refusing to release the company's trade secrets for fear they will reveal the Abound's solar panels were not up to par.
Todd Shepherd, an investigative reporter at a Libertarian think tank, told Fox News that former employees have told him the panels had "catastrophic" defects, such as a tendency to catch fire and much lower output than promised.

"Either people at Abound knew they couldn't produce a good product and they misled the DOE," Shepherd said. "Or the DOE knew how bad the product was and they were willing to overlook it simply because the politics of green energy is such a feel good political movement."

Weld County Attorney General Ken Buck is also investigating Abound separately from the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee investigation for potential securities fraud and consumer fraud.

According to a statement from Buck's office:

• Investigators are looking into possible instances of securities fraud based on allegations that Abound officials knew the company was selling defective products but solicited investments without telling investors about the deficiencies.

• A second allegation centers on a bridge loan received by Abound that was used to keep the company afloat until it received federally guaranteed loans. That investigation centers on whether lending institutions were misled when Abound applied for the bridge loan.

• A third allegation centers on possible consumer fraud and whether officials at Abound knowingly sold defective products to consumers.

The complete list of faltering or bankrupt green-energy companies:

Evergreen Solar ($25 million)*
SpectraWatt ($500,000)*
Solyndra ($535 million)*
Beacon Power ($43 million)*
Nevada Geothermal ($98.5 million)
SunPower ($1.2 billion)
First Solar ($1.46 billion)
Babcock and Brown ($178 million)
EnerDel’s subsidiary Ener1 ($118.5 million)*
Amonix ($5.9 million)
Fisker Automotive ($529 million)
Abound Solar ($400 million)*
A123 Systems ($279 million)*
Willard and Kelsey Solar Group ($700,981)*
Johnson Controls ($299 million)
Brightsource ($1.6 billion)
ECOtality ($126.2 million)
Raser Technologies ($33 million)*
Energy Conversion Devices ($13.3 million)*
Mountain Plaza, Inc. ($2 million)*
Olsen’s Crop Service and Olsen’s Mills Acquisition Company ($10 million)*
Range Fuels ($80 million)*
Thompson River Power ($6.5 million)*
Stirling Energy Systems ($7 million)*
Azure Dynamics ($5.4 million)*
GreenVolts ($500,000)
Vestas ($50 million)
LG Chem’s subsidiary Compact Power ($151 million)
Nordic Windpower ($16 million)*
Navistar ($39 million)
Satcon ($3 million)*
Konarka Technologies Inc. ($20 million)*
Mascoma Corp. ($100 million)

*Denotes companies that have filed for bankruptcy.

The problem begins with the issue of government picking winners and losers in the first place. Venture capitalist firms exist for this very reason, and they choose what to invest in by looking at companies’ business models and deciding if they are worthy. When the government plays venture capitalist, it tends to reward companies that are connected to the policymakers themselves or because it sounds nice to “invest” in green energy.

The 2009 stimulus set aside $80 billion to subsidize politically preferred energy projects. Since that time, 1,900 investigations have been opened to look into stimulus waste, fraud, and abuse (although not all are linked to the green-energy funds), and nearly 600 convictions have been made. Of that $80 billion in clean energy loans, grants, and tax credits, at least 10 percent has gone to companies that have since either gone bankrupt or are circling the drain.

CORRECTION:

Figures for four companies have been updated: Beacon Power received $43 million from the U.S. government, not $69 million as originally reported. Azure Dynamics received $5.4 million from the federal government, not $120 million as originally reported. Compact Power Inc. received $151 million as part of the stimulus, not $150 million as originally reported. Willard and Kelsey Solar Group received $700,981 in government funding, not $6 million as originally reported.

The following companies have been removed from the original list: AES’s subsidiary Eastern Energy, LSP Energy, Schneider Electric, and Uni-Solar did not receive government-backed loans, based on additional research. The National Renewable Energy Lab did received $200 million in stimulus funding, but it is a government laboratory.

I do believe, you have no other answer but to act like you are 12 and say something stupid like that or call me names and say BOOM!

I do believe, you have your lips so securely wrapped around Obama's pecker that you cannot say that Obama being a a terrible President. Will be criticized for lavish Hawaii Vacations; when people are losing homes and jobs.

re: Obama lives better than kings

quote:

lett's be fair and say American Presidents live better than kings

While this is true - and the overall magnitude of the expense would not be effected one way or another - it is instructional to look at the way prior presidents have treated their privileges with respect to spending on their personal desires.

Just look at how the clintons/obama treated their 'vacations.' The Bush's, Carter, Nixon, Johnson, Eisenhower, (don;t know about FDR and prior) usually went back to their homes or to Camp David. The clinon's and obama's go to fancy multi-million dollar resorts and drag along entourages using multiple USA provided transportation.

The clinon/obama's treat it as a royal privilege.

Their official travels are not a problem, except during election time when they manufacture 'official' reasons to go to prime election spots for a campaign appearance. I know, all presidents have done some of this - but the clinton/obamas made it pro-forma.

The deficit tripled under Reagan and doubled under Bush. No presidents took more vacations than those two. We got into these "dire straights" because of unfunded spending with those two.

And I believe you're the only person on the planet who believes the president wasn't allowed to play golf. Congrats on believing and saying a really stupid thing.

Not that it's any of your business, but Obama did not get my vote last election.

Threads this one make it really hard to take any 'conservative' viewpoint seriously when it is obvious you have absoutely no desire to be politically objective.

It's pretty obvious that you have no clue of what an impeachable offense is. You don't like Obama. We get it.

That is just bull shite.

Where did 'those two' go on their 'vacations?' - they went back to their HOMES. Where does Obama go??

We got into these dire straits because 'those two' did not veto the DEMs gluttonous spending sprees. And I was sad they didn't. BUT - they were already being crucified in the MSM because they dared to even SUGGEST that spending was the problem.

We got into these dire straits BY DESIGN of the DEM party. They now have what they want - an unlimited appetite for more 'free money' with enough votes to ensure that nothing can be done to stop it.

Reagan and Bush merely delayed the inevitable for a while - and for their efforts get blamed for the DEMs excesses.

They were not perfect - could have trimmed some from the deficit, but it would have been a pittance compared to what the DEMs demanded.

This crap belongs to the DEMs - you know it - I know it - but we are raising a another generation too ignorant and purposely under-educated to know it.

History will record your version. But you know that all the misery that is to follow is directly a result of the DEMs gluttony and thuggery.

I am too old to have to worry about the misery to come. But I weep for my great-grandchildren who will never know the magnificence that was once America.

I'm pretty conservative but even I think the OP is dumb and misleading.

"Lives better than Kings" makes no sense. Obama does have to, you know, run them most powerful country and military and the world. The life of the POTUS, no matter what you think of them, is not easy in any way.

The Royal Family doesn't really have to do shite other than make appearances and sit on their arse all day just for basically "being born"

When I think "living better than Kings" I don't think of having the most powerful title in the world...

How was the economy under Bush and Reagan?

How is the economy now? Both Bush and Reagan were far more successful presidents than Obama. Obama is spending and raising taxes during a near depression. Obama cannot even get his own democrats to sign on to his budget. Obama sucks, he is a failure, get over it and buy a vowel for a hundred Alex- to say the words OBAMA FAILED and give it up.

The media shamed Dubya Bush into ceasing his golf games because of the war; yet, they didn't do the same thing to Obama. Do you ever wonder why? Well maybe because the media has their lips planted around Obama's pecker, that's why.

Stein also mentions Bush in his article. I agree. It doesn't matter who the POTUS is.

This is one area I think Romney might have been really good at - cutting costs of his own operation.

How is it a stupid comparison? We spend way too much money on one person. A good leader wouldn't want that type of cash spent on himself - or his family - especially with the state of the economy and the constant whining about rich people paying their "fair" share.
