It was the grandfather paradox played out on screen except with himself.

re: just finished looper

Once young Joe became substantially different than Old Joe, the Old Jo we see should have ceased to exist. Young Joe could never become the Old Joe we know from the film, so Old Joe should have changed along with young Joe, or old Joe shouldn't have died when young Joe killed himself.

The movie tries to have it both ways and it doesn't make sense. Just because the film reaches a conclusion doesn't mean they did it without faulty logic.

re: just finished looper

it makes sense just fine.

It's a movie that uses multiple theories of time travel. It's not a time travel movie. It's a movie about characters.

Again, it uses multiverse when it fits the narrative and it uses single universe when it fits.

If you're thinking this much about it, you're doing it wrong and completely missing the point of the movie

I said earlier in the thread that you have to put time travel aside to enjoy the film.

I enjoyed the movie just fine, but if you want to have a conversation about time travel and then just say "it works because they take liberties whenever they feel like it," well no, it doesn't. It may make the story flow, but that doesn't mean it's correct.

Again, loved the movie, but they whiffed on time travel.

No, they don't know who the Rainmaker is.

But that whole flash forward at the end where it showed how the kid watched his mom die and stuff because of old Joe, it seemed pretty obvious that was the reason he would become the Rainmaker

you're talking about it as if time travel really exists and they "got it wrong"

it doesn't

You would watch Star Wars and complain about all the tight manuevering the X-wings do in space.

When someone would say "that's not the point of the movie" I'm sure you would retort "Space travel is what the movie is about and they wiffed on it".

I just wish that they would've explained in better detail why getting rid of the rainmaker was so important? What exactly was happening in the future?

An explanation of how people suddenly have TK powers in the year 2044 would've been nice also.

Didn't they say it was the result of a gene mutation?

Its not. Django Unchained is the best movie of the year.

Oddly enough JGL was cast to play in that as well..but dropped out of it.

yeah they mentioned something like that briefly and never talked about it again. Considering how crucial it is to the storyline, you'd think they would've made a bigger deal about it.

I thought it was an ok movie, but not great

that was the point

it wasn't a big deal.

it was a genetic mutation that affected 10% of the population and it never really "took off".(pardon the pun) There's no need to explain it, because it wasn't a big deal....until we find out that the rainmaker is a super powerful tk that can make people explode. That's what makes this kid so special/terrifying in the future. If tk was talked about and explained more, it would have remained in our minds throughout the movie and made the ending all too predictable

Exactly. It wasnt discussed in greater detail because the story was told through a narrators perspective and the narrator didnt think it was anything special.

My problem was that the story was told through young joes perspective and he knew that the rainmaker needed to be stopped yet the viewer was never given any details as to why he must be stopped.

They tell you why Old Joe wants him to be stopped, which Young Joe is aware of.

What they don't tell you is why Young Joe should give a shite.

That was my point. I could understand that young joe would wantnto save Cid from that fate but they contradict that a few scenes before the finale with young joe wanting to kill Cid to prevent the rainmaker.

Yes, but in the future I don't think they didn't know who he is. They don't know his name or his back story, I got the idea he's like Kaiser Soze, someone they are all scared shitless of, but don't know who he is.

Also I think the flash forward scene was just young Joe figuring it out and showing if the the benefit of the audience.

I didn't get too caught up in the plot holes of time travel, so that didn't bother me.

The child actor was great.

For some reason the makeup on JGL to make him look like a younger Bruce Willis bothered me. I really don't think it made him look that much more like BW. And when they are sitting in the diner, if you look at their ears, they are completely different.

Overall good movie and very entertaining. Certainly not the "best of the year" but I would definitely watch it again.

glad to know that any perceived inconsistencies with time travel didn't bother you

but bruce willis and JGL's ears being different did
