Great story- (currently 1/4 of the way through). But damn Africa is such a shithole. You can't get anything done there because all of funds are stolen away

As I was reading it, I like so many others kept thinking "Wow, how could we offer some assistance" Then around page 60ish when you read Frederik's reasoning and explanation for just passing through, it does make complete sense. Any dollar, material, or food we'd send would be stolen away and kept by corrupt officials. They can't get out of their own way to help themselves. It's sad that this is where civilization had its roots yet during this century of unfathomable advances, they slide further and further back while their resources, wildlife, and natural wealths are stolen away from them by foreign companies. I will say a 30,000 acre cattle ranch in one of those savannahs does sound pretty tempting. You'd have to arm and maintain a small army to protect it though.

I read "Heart of Darkness" last year so this story was particularly interesting. Although Heart of Darkness is fiction, it's obviously based on truth because there are so many similarities between that book and this travelogue.

no, nobody got murdered. looking back though, it seems like they were miserable about 98% of this trip. Outside of being able to say we did it, I just dont see the point. It doesnt seem like the scenery was picturesque, they met about 5 decent people, and had to work their arse off the whole trip and be stressed out due to many many factors. Maybe they are a little more adventurous than me, but it just doesnt seem worth it with so many other great places to see in the world. cool story though. Also, did he say anything interesting after his final synopsis? I didnt read anything else after that.

The thrill of being able to say you've done something that really no one else has written about (or possibly done in the past 50 years). I'm only on p.20, is there any mention of the different types of animals they saw?

This is what I got out of the little reading I did. I get that one might want adventure, etc, but damn, this doesn't seem in any way like a trip I would ever want to be on.

You'll need to completely colonize with a small army for that to work. Not politically correct these days. I bet I could go my whole life without wondering across Africa.

i'm on page 26 now. what the frick is the point of this trip? sounds like he knew going in that it would be terrible and up to this point it has been exactly that. the guy is a really good writer and i'm glad i'm reading this two years later because i'd be checking that thread constantly for updates. some of the pictures have been wonderful.
