Which draft was the worst you witnessed other than 99 RW

For me it was the 1990 draft when we selected Renaldo Turnbull with the 14th pick. Three picks later, Dallas selected Emmitt Smith. The only notable player the Saints picked was Smeenge and Turnbull in 1990. Everyone else was not all that good including Mike Buck.

You can play "What if?" forever. There is no such thing as a "can't miss" draft pick anymore. Remember Leinart, who was supposed to be the most NFL ready QB in some time.

Look at the stink fest that was 2003: Johnathan Sullivan, Jon Stinchcomb, Cie Grant, Montrae Holland, Melvin Williams, Kareem Kelly and Talman Gardner.

Stinchcomb was ok for a year or two and Holland started a few games, but was nothing special. Grant was a waste and Sullivan is one of the worst picks we ever made considering we traded up and passed up taking Marcus Trufant, Terrell Suggs, Jordan Gross, Troy Polamalu and Ty Warren. Or waiting around with the two picks and getting a combo of Nnamdi Asomugha, Andre Woolfork, Jeff Fain, William Joseph, Bryant Johnson and/or Charles Tillman. Then we passed up Ken Hamlin in the second round to take Stichcomb.

1996 was very lackluster: Alex Molden, Je'Rod Cherry, Brady Smith, Ricky Whittle, Mercury Hayes, Tom Ackerman, Terry Guess, Keno Hills, Toderick Malone and Henry Lusk.

Ackerman was ok. Smith was good, but always hurt. Everyone else sucked!

I don't know about worst but I remember being absolutely befuddled when we traded two picsk to get Jonathan Sullivan. I didn't even know who the hell he was. I don't remember a single player contributing from that draft

Edit: Forgot about Stinchcomb. He wasn't a total bust. Took him like 5 years tho

Sullivan was a classic hype pick.

when I saw that go down, I felt like they had reached to get him. But in no way could anyone have ever predicted how little of an impact he would end up having. I remember him getting a sack vs. the Texans in the home opener that year but that was it.

I mean look at the draft picks management had brought in before Sullivan. We got Darren Howard in 2000, Deuce McAllister in 2001, and Charles Grant/Donte Stallworth in 2002 with the first picks. Its not like those guys had no impact when they came in. I remember not liking the Sullivan pick but based on what those guys had done for the Saints, I figured he end up doing alright.

That one was a swing and a miss though. It happens sometimes, its not like there is some simple science to scouting a player. Pretty sure if they knew he had such an awful work ethic they would not have taken him.

I was absolutely sure that move up was to get Trufant as well. He's still hanging on in Seattle today. Now his brother is gonna be in the 2013 draft as a CB. Looks like 2nd-3rd Rd range. Maybe get him.

phew, these worst of the worst Saints history threads can be numerous. I prefer them for offseason. For historical perspective i always say they shite in the bed before they even started in the NFL...

1967- as an exapmsion team they get the #1 overall. They traded it for a backup QB that couldn't beat out barely a QB Kilmer.

they then had the last pick of the 1st Rd #26... Les Kelley and Alabama fullback. He couldn't even make it at the position, they tried him at LB, only played special teams and was out of football by '69

Pick #27- Bo Burris DB Houston- again, no starts and out of football by '69

That #1 ended up being Bubba Smith for the Colts who had some big years and was a key component of some dominant defenses. Even if they wanted a QB the first two that year weren't bad... Steve Spurrier and Bob Griese.

damned from the start they were!

Ricky Williams and Sullivan. Ricky because it was so shocking we gave up that much. Sullivan because I've never been so pissed off at a draft considering who was available.

Russell Erxleben is having a drink at the bar when a Saints fan reccognizes him and asks "Russell how's it going?"

"Oh, I can't kick," he replies.

'97 was gawdawful. Turnbull was actually a pretty good player for a few years. Pretty sure he made the Pro Bowl once.

ETA:

Yup... Was also a 1st Team All-Pro selection when they moved him from DE to OLB. He got hurt 2 seasons later and was never the same.

Renaldo Turnbull - Pro Football Reference
