Yes, I mean they tend to go bang when you pull the trigger.

They are an entry level pistol, if this is your first gun it is a start and better than nothing. If someone was breaking into my home it might not be the fist choice if I have multiple choices due to reliability. If I needed a gun to hunt down a daughter's boyfriend, it would be a first choice gun...

Everybody needs that one disposable firearm for just such an occasion

But, if your wife gave you ANY gun, that's a right direction step...

I'm pretty sure I remember them coming with a lifetime warranty as well. They aren't top of the line but def not a POS

This
And this
My dad got a $99 revolver as one of his gifts. That's still better than 75% of gifts out there.

HoLeInOnEr05,
Sorry, but I have NO personal experience w/ Hi-Points so I can't really add anything useful to that discussion. Like nearly all shooters everywhere, I've always scoffed at the low price and the ugly looks and never seriously considered that Hi-Point guns might have ANY good traits. OTOH, I've since read more about them on the 'net and realize I might be wrong. (See the earlier link.)
At any rate, whether the gun your wife bought is good quality or not, she bought you a gun; she bought you something she thought you'd want and enjoy; and she went through some effort to do so (went to a store, completed the paperwork, paid for it, etc). I'm saying all of this to point out something I'm sure you already understand.....you sir, are a very lucky man!
Take good care of your lovely bride!
Merry Christmas to all.
