Brooks was a really good player who sat behind great players, but he is far from the most underrated of all time.

What about Kyle Williams? He was perhaps LSU's fourth most talked about defensive lineman on the 2003 squad.

Well the other 3 were pretty good.

What I'm saying is he wasn't on any of their levels yet so he shouldn't have been talked about as much.

Early years

McCray attended Westfield High School and in 2004 helped the football team to a second place finish at the Class 5A state championship. He earned first-team all-district honors as a senior in 2005.

He went on to play at Louisiana State University contributing mostly in special teams and as a backup both at safety and linebacker. For his career, he played in 52 games with 13 starts and recorded 196 tackles.

Professional career

McCray was signed by the Dallas Cowboys in 2010 as an undrafted free agent, based on the recommendation of special teams coach Joe DeCamillis. As a rookie he had 28 special teams tackles, the third-most in team history since 1988 and the most by any Cowboys player since Jim Schwantz team-record 32 in 1996.

He led the team in special teams tackles his first two years, becoming the first Cowboys player to do it consecutively, since Bill Bates did it in 1989-1990.[1] He also emerged as the unit leader, becoming a team captain by his third year.

After two seasons of playing in defensive packages as a hybrid linebacker and safety, in 2012 he got his first career start at strong safety against the Chicago Bears, replacing Barry Church who suffered a season ending Achilles injury.

Danny McCray was mostly ridiculed by fans during his time with LSU. He didn't play that well at the college level but he has turned into a pretty good pro. I believe he recently started at safety against the Saints.

Edit: info from wikipedia

He's a good special teamer and has done more in the NFL than pretty much anyone would've imagined but he's not a good safety.

I think Perry Riley is kind of underrated as well. Overshadowed by Kelvin Sheppard and Darry Beckwith and rarely mentioned on here, but he was a solid LB for the Tigers

I believe he has improved his game quite a bit since his time with LSU. The Malveto defense had him in man coverage too often which isn't his strong suit. The NFL has proven that some weaknesses in coverage can be overlooked if the safety does well in run support. I don't think he'll ever make a pro bowl unless as a special teams player. He plays more like a coverage linebacker at an imposing 6'1" 222 pounds.

So far, he has 120 combined tackles and 3.5 sacks this season. He is definitely toward the top of the list.

After seeing Reid and Loston this year, it should make people appreciate Brandon Taylor more. He never got his due from many tiger fans. Most wanted Loston playing ahead of him last year.

Buster Davis was over shadowed by bowe and early but his hands was maybe the best of the bunch.

I backup who I always thought was solid was Ryan Willis. I think he was backup DE his entire career but I remember him making a lot plays. If I weren't on my phone I'd pull up his stats.

Brooks is certainly up there. He made plays while HB was suspended that no one made this year. That hole wasn't filled very well this year.

I don't know if I'd say most underrated ever but he was a serious player that didn't get the props he should've gotten.

I'm still a big Ron Brooks fan. He is his own best cheerleader. I loved how he would pump up the fans in the stands when he was down there waiting on a kickoff or punt (can't remember which he did).

I wish him nothing but the best. Glad he came to LSU.

I agree. What about Ryan Baker? He played his butt off early at LSU and only got better, but you didn't really hear a lot about him from the media.

This. His leadership was something our defense really missed this year.
