re: England and WC 2014

The three historically dominant teams in world soccer are Brazil, Germany, and Italy with Argentina very close to being in that group. The first three all have pretty big population advantages over England with Brazil having 3x as many as people as England and Germany having 30,000,000 more. Italy and England are pretty comparable so you just have to tip your hat at what Italy has been able to do on the international stage. That doesn't somehow make England some sort of joke.

England is in a group size wise with the Spain's, Argentina's, and France's of the game. Spain is obviously the class right now but if this conversation were held 6 years ago England would have a better history than Spain. France did well to capitalize on their golden generation with Zidane and Henry but other than that era they have been no better than England.

Same with Argentina. They capitalized on having Maradona but before and since then have had similar results as England. Also, by all accounts their success was based on hideous play because I know that matters to some of you.

So like I said England is basically right where they should be. It's only their penalty record that holds them back.

re: England and WC 2014

quote:

Uruguay:

Currently have a good squad but this guy is talking about since 1966. They have failed to qualify for 5 of the last 11 world cups out of CONMEBOL.

quote:

Mexico: 1st in last two Gold Cups, Round of 16 in last 5 WCs, U-23s won Gold in 2012 Olympics

Anything with a U before it really doesn't matter here. Also, imagine the trophies England would have if they were in CONCACAF.

quote:

Portugal: Semifinal in Euro 2000 and 2012, Runner-Up in Euro 2004, 4th in WC2006, Round of 16 in WC2010

Again, they have failed to qualify for 7 of the last 11 WCs and only once advanced past the group stage in that time.

I didn't see him say 1966 until after I typed all that out.

Well, I think comparing the teams from the last 10 or so years is a better way of determining overall strength today than 46 years ago, but that's just me.

However, most of these "failed to qualify" results are pre-2000, and I really don't think they are that relevant to the team's status right now.

He has brought up 1966 multiple times.

Correct...just like I said...NOT a world power since 1966 and just OUTSIDE the top ten !
Facts don't lie and the RESULTS, as you say, stand for themselves !
England is not a small country that enjoys "football" now and again....their ENTIRE sports psyche is wrapped up in soccer...MORE-SO than any nation other than Brazil or Italy.
Their PITIFUL national performances actually pale in comparison for the countries passion/resouces for the game....is it POSSIBLE you can see/admit that ????

So in your mind they are behind teams that only qualify for 50% of World Cups?

England has gotten out of the group stage more times than Portugal or Uruguay have even been in the WC.

If you are talking just last 10 years yes they have underachieved while other similar nations like France and Spain have been able to shine. If you are talking about "since-1966" then no I don't think they have really underachieved all that much. Again, give them even an average penalty record and their history is up there with anyone's outside the Big 3.

If so, the board has finally truly arrived. I'll do my best to keep it going.

Dude, I'm not looking for a novel, you could have just provided a list of 25-40 players.

That's some solid analysis on page 5. Just now able to see this thread unfortunately.
