Has Messi passed CR7 in terms of exposure? At least in the States, he gets way more exposure. Not terribly sure about anywhere else though.
I think this has changed since the debate because of the goal record. In the summer, CR7 definitely looked to be the most popular (due to EURO 2012).

Several colleagues of mine work in India, and although soccer is well below cricket in terms of popularity, they all worship Barca and Messi.

Yeah, Barca has far superior marketing. You seem Barca kits all over, not as much with Madrid.
I think the timing of the argument changes everything because of the continued amazing success of both Messi and Barca.

I, too, used to work with a lot of Indians. I understand their love of cricket, but they seem to be absolutely mad about soccer for a nation that isn't particularly good at it.

When I went to Thailand in 2009, everyone was super stoked for Liverpool's tour there. It was literally all you saw in magazines. Those people were obsessed on a level I've never seen in the US.
