PFF Review of Tampa Game Performances

Jabari Greer--"On a standout day for the entire Saints defense, no player made more of an impact than Jabari Greer (+5.0), who earned his highest grade of the year, and the highest grade he’s received since he became a Saint in 2009. Targeted 10 times on the day, he allowed just five completions for 63 yards. And of the five balls thrown his way that weren’t completed, Greer got his hands on four, breaking up a pair of passes to go along with two interceptions." Also, Greer was given the game ball by PFF.
Will Smith--"Just a week ago we were rebuking Will Smith for his poor and invisible play this season. Against Tampa, however, he played a significant role in pitching the shutout. Smith (+4.1) flashed the rare ability that made him one of the league’s highest paid defensive ends. He had his most productive game of the season rushing the passer, finishing with a sack, two hits, and three hurries — six disruptions in all. More impressive, though, was his performance defending the run."
Junior Gallette--"Playing 37 snaps, he notched eight pressures on just 31 pass rushes. It’s that kind of productivity that will have the Saints strongly thinking about letting Smith go this offseason and going with Galette full-time at DRE."
Patrick Robinson--"Allowing just two catches in 45 snaps in coverage, Patrick Robinson gave up 0.64 yards per snap in coverage, a mark that led the team." Wow, we were all bitching about PRob, too.
Drew Brees--"Brees (+6.2) completed 74% of his aimed passes for four touchdowns, notching his highest grade of the season. It may not have been the most impressive passing display we’ve seen from the Saint QB — this was his fourth-best performance in terms of completion percentage and passer rating, and just his eighth-highest YPA on the season — but he played an efficient game and, in just his fourth game this season without an interception, avoided the killer mistakes that have doomed them in recent weeks. Of course, it helps that he was pressured on just 21.9% of snaps after facing heat over 40% of the time last week, but Brees is still deserving of praise, particularly for his play against the blitz. On the nine snaps Tampa sent extra rushers, he completed eight of nine passes for 12.2 YPA and a touchdown."
Joe Morgan--I just thought this was funny. "After catching two passes for 61 yards, Saints’ receiver Joe Morgan actually lowered his season average to 41.2 yards per reception."

P Rob has quietly become our best cover corner. He'll get burned every now and again, but he consistently has good coverage.

I like PRob, but Josh Freeman was the QB Sunday.

His career is clearly in a death spiral, along with Brees and Graham.
In all seriousness though, I was ready to write off Morgan as a preseason wonder, but he has come on very strong lately and made some impressive catches. He's no Meachem yet, but he's getting there.

quote:I agree...but that's how they've all looked this year. We just see more of it from PRob because he's on the other team's best WR.

Greer is the best corner on the team.
PRob is frustrating because he has all the talent in the world, but looks lost half the time.
As bad as White was to start the season, I'd say Greer is our best followed by White then PRob. IMO

I'm sorry, but that's just not true anymore. I imagine it'll take a while for it to sink in.

Mack, IAQ, White are the future. The rest of our backfield has been unimpressive INCLUDING Greer. Greer has played like shite minus a handful of plays and this weeks complete game.

All of our DBs are inconsistent seeing as the opposing QB's usually have forever to throw.

We must move on from some of the household names on this defense and infuse some young talent to have Spags defense come to fruition. We cannot afford to be passive and just draft a player or two and hope they develop. We need to be aggressive and draft/ pick up players this off season to make a difference. Cut the fat cash cows on defense and the guys that are not playing at a high level (smith, Harper, Greer, Vilma, Jenkins, p rob). Some of these guys are around as vets and are smart players, but with a new defense, now is the time to try to get some REAL playmaking youth on this team. I'm tired of having a sub par defense. I'm tired of puckering my a-hole every time the defense takes the field. GW fielded some descent teams while he was here, but I KNOW that with the right players, Spags can give Payton/Brees the best compliment to the offense that we so badly need.

I listened to the radio brodcast of game and Hokie repeatedly said Freeman had his worst game ever against the Saints. All these stats on the db!s are not true indicators of there abilities . Take with a grain of salt.

The slow start sucked.
An 8-8 finish after starting 0-4.

And our defense made him have a bad game.
Do offenses play in a vacuum?

The player I'm most confused about is Greer.
There's no reason he shouldn't be our best CB. And sometimes he's awesome.
But for the majority of this season, he seems like he's lost the plot.

He just lets dudes blow by him. If they get a step on him or make him bite, he's burnt most of the time. His recovery time has fallen off big time. He is still great at jumping underneath routes though.

I don't think we're too far off. Smith should be gone. Harper is over paid for a safety, but his play has been good. Still needs to stop that shoulder tackling BS. Jenkins needs to move back to CB. IAQ just owned his arse. Vilma could help for another year, but I'm not sure what he's set to make next year.
One thing I noticed is once Shanle and Herring were no longer our starting linebackers, the defense started to steadily improved.
You're right though: we need fresh young talent. Trim the fat.
