LSU 66 @ UCIrvine 60 - FINAL!!!! TIGERS WIN 7-1

LSU (6-1) stays on the west coast for their second straight contest away from home at UC-Irvine (5-6). They look to get back on the winning side of basketball after a 89 to 70 loss at Boise State on Friday. While UCI isn't a powerhouse, they will offer LSU a few matchup problems that the Tigers will have to make sure they can handle.
While starters Adam Folker and Will Davis are only 6'9" and 6'8" respectively, Mike Best (6'10" 205 So) has the second best Adjusted SoS on their team. They also play John Ryan (6'10" 247 So) and Conor Clifford (7'0" 268 Fr) a few minutes a game. If LSU gets into more foul trouble, it will be hard to contain these big players with much smaller inexperienced defenders.
With the size of players UC-Irvine has you would expect a good rebounding team, and the Anteaters do not disappoint. Averaging 44.5 rebounds per game (4th in nation) and a 7.7 positive rebound margin (30th in nation), UCI will be LSU's toughest rebounding matchup to date. UCI also ranks 9th in the nation in field goal percentage defense allowing only 35.1% of field goals in the basket. None of the 11 teams UCI has played shot over 44.2 percent.
UC Irvine is 20th in the nation in bench minutes, meaning they should be able to stay fresh, even in an up-tempo game. They are 3-0 at home with a good win against Nevada (7-4). They lost to UCLA in overtime 80 to 79 and just beat a very respectable Fresno St team on the road 58-51.
The Tigers will be starting Corban Collins at the point guard position after a team and career high 19 points in 19 minutes of action at Boise on Friday. Anthony Hickey should be seeing more playing time than the 13 minutes he received against Boise. LSU will need more than the 22 minutes Johnny O'Bryant was able to stay on the court before fouling out and they will need JOB to take care of the basketball better. His 6 turnovers were a team high for the season.
Opponent SoS only calculated for players appearing in at least 10 min/gm.
SoS Explaination HERE
Charles Carmouche passed up Andrew Del Piero for 5th on the team in Adjusted SoS after the Boise game. Carmouche leads the team with 5 Highly Efficient (45+ Adj SoS) games on the season. Collins has had his most productive games the last two contests, including his first Highly Efficient and "Important Player" grades on the season against Boise St.
It makes sense to note that last year these two met. LSU won 66-59 led by Justin Hamilton (14pts, 11rebs) and Eddie Ludwig (12pts, career high, 5 rebs). LSU was held to 31% shooting on the game but were able to outrebound the Anteaters by 7. UCI senior guard Michael Wilder led the Anteaters with 19 points after hitting 5 three pointers.

I initially didn't expect this to be a tough game for us. After reading your breakdown, we may have some trouble if we can't grab some rebounds.

We could easily get swept on this road swing

We need JOB to stay out of foul trouble and ADP to hit the offensive glass better early in the game. I also think Collins needs to play more physical, but you can't be mad at a guy that just went for 19 when no one else was doing much scoring. I just think that with his body type, he could drive and get a lot of FTs as well physically tiring out the other teams players.

So not even UCI has a video feed of the game?

losing to Irvine would be a really big disappointment... however, they may be one of the few teams we'll play doing better on the glass than us so far.

No Geaux Zone video for this one. Only the radio broadcast with Hawthorne. The LSU page has the same link you do for the UCI network.
This game on paper looks like our worst nightmare. They are huge, rebound well, and hold opposing teams to very low shooting percentage. If I was CJJ,unless Andrew was having the game of his life, I would substitute Coleman for him early and put on the press off and on the rest of the game.
Seems like steals is the only way we will be able to fast break and get shots off before their impressive defense sets up. Hopefully they aren't as good as they seem to be on paper and we can rattle them a little and hit some shots without any turnovers on our part. I notice their point guard is a freshmen so maybe that will help us.
Hickey still being in the Tigerdoghouse and not starting isn't going to help any unless he gets in a lot earlier than he did last game. Yeah Corban deserves to start after what he did last game but I would like to see him at off guard and Hickey at point.
Kind of strange that with so many big men they play three guards. I guess none of them can play a true 3 position. Maybe we can get a mismatch going with Malik Morgan or Shane Hammink.
Geaux Tigers and good luck as we will probably need it.

While he is a freshman, Alex Young ranked 31st in the nation in assist/turnover ratio at 2.93 (41 assists, 14 turnovers). That's only 14 turnovers in 11 games. Pretty frickin good for a freshman.
He doesn't look like he is easily rattled. On paper they look very tough, but that 5-6 record is hard to be intimidated by. I hope the Tigers hold the intangibles for this one. If no video feed is available Ill certainly be listening.

UC Irvine has indeed posted a live video feed link to the game, as SoS mentioned.
Odds makers opened the game a tossup but the line currently has LSU favored by 1.5.

Don't expect Hickey to start tonight South? I mean it looks like his suspension is over

sounds like collins is going to start

So, is Hickey still in the doghouse?

Jones was quoted saying Collins WILL start. Will he start at PG or over Morgan is up in the air. I assumed at PG.
I think Hickey still gets some minutes but he only played 13 last game. Coach obvious wants to make sure he knows he has to work hard to get back to where he needs to be for this team.

So 1 loss and noone wants to talk basketball? This is actually a pretty big game for LSU at least development wise. Should be very interesting to see them compete against the size UCI brings. There isn't a team in the SEC with the size they have.

I'll also say I wonder how long Collins can hit over 50% of his 3's... His shot is very quick and pretty for sure. I know he hasn't been one to throw up a ton of bad shots either like we are use to with Stringer and occasionally Hickey.

I'd love to talk some hoops, SoS, but I got work until 5 : s.
And yeah we're gonna need to have 50%+ accuracy behind the arc tonight I think. No way we'll be able to consistently penetrate the paint tonight.

Im hoping we try and combat their strength insde defensively by using pressure defense to get steals and score in transition. Especially when Hickey is in the game I think we should be doing some pressing.
