the Star Rating System for recruits

this time of the year always gets me interested in the above rating system and how us fans use it to form our opinion of players. we become way too enamored of 5 star guys and actually are disappointed as heck with 3 star guys. imo, the process of a national org. actually rating all of the eligible players in america is a way over simplifyed and faulty event. yes, it is very popular and helpful to fans but falls woefully short as far as what a coach need consider when offering a schollie. usc should be the poster child in the fallacy of using ratings as the sole factor in determining the quality of a recruit. once the measurables are evaluated the key to a recruits actual success in college is "hunger and heart". a man child on his hi school team often never has to face adversity or challenges to his superiority on the field. also, once the schollie is earned and the kid enters college many kids aren't willing to "pay the price" as they never really had to do that before and the distractions of college life act as a deterrent. ie.,wine, women and song.
it seems to me that many 5 star guys don't work out as expected. to me, the 4 star guys are the key. just an observation.

The difference between 5* and 4* recruits often is height/weight and how prototypical your body is for the position you play. Look up stats and see that 4* players often outplay 5* players.

Most of the time, this is correct; however, Jarvis Landry was a 5* WR at 5'11.

I don't have any numbers to back it up but I would guess there are about as many misses on the 4 star side. There are just so many more of them. For example, LSU has 16 current 4 star commitments per Rivals and expect another 3 or 4. So, if 10 become major contributors it'll be a great class, but there would also be 10 that didn't pan out.

Agree. We all expect great things from every kid in the class but it never works out that way for one reason or another. I usually hope that half of a class turn into major contributors to the team. I consider that a successful class. Sometimes it's more, sometimes less but on average if half of every class develop into starters or major contributors then the class was successful.
I'm very hard as a grader when it comes to 5* talent. I just don't think there are that many of them. To me a 5* should be a transcendent type talent or someone that is at the very elite at their position, not in a particular year but when looking at all years. Just because the top guy in a particular class is the best at his position doesn't mean he is a 5*. I'd be hardpressed to call more than 5-7 kids 5* in this class.

In all seriousness though, there are booms and busts with 5 stars, 4 stars, 3 stars, 2 stars and no stars. The difference between a 4 star and 5 star is really usually just a guess. And remember that there are a lot more 4 stars and 3 stars than 5 stars. If anything, it's more of just a good guideline.
Look at the recruiting mock draft on here every year. We all tend to agree with you to a certain extent, but the highly ranked guys go high every year while this years hiesman trophy winner went in the 23rd round!

Johnny Manziel says it all about the star rating system. From 3* to Heisman in one year. They can't say he just developed that much in one year. They just suck at their system. Who even pays for that crap?

Getting 5* kids does make one feel warm/fuzzy, but doesnt always pan out as such. For every Robert Toomer, there's a Jacob Hester. Another reliable recruiting indicator I like to follow is the offer sheet. If you're offered by Miles, Kiffin, Saban, Richt, Meyer, etc, you're doing something right. Also, I trust in the coaches. We can get wow'd by watching videos, but theses guys get paid to scout/coach. Many times, they've been on the kid for 2+ yrs. They see them camp, etc. They know what they're doing. It's human potential. There's always some misses. Mark Richt offered Thomas Davis without any videos or live action FB. He saw him in a basketball game and thought he was a good athlete. Same goes for Courtney Taylor @ Auburn. I trust our evaluators. Besides, highlight videos aren't usually montages of fumbles, drops, etc.

Actually, the difference is that if you are a 4-star recruit and either committed to or considering Charmin Detergent Junior College, you automatically become a 5-star the closer signing day gets.
