That conversation heralded a new day in LSU football. It’s now four decades since Lora Hinton and Mike Williams became the first black football players at LSU.

Great article. Williams doesn't get enough credit in discussions of LSU greats. He was one of the best.

Williams was one heck of a ball player. I remember seeing him in uniform for the first time. It was sureal.

Williams had some great games playing Hammond and Brad Davis back in the day. He played for Covington.

great article and sounds like two great guys, alos interesting to hear them say how little trouble they were given being the first FB players...proves again my theory that LA (and the south) sometimes gets a bad rap on this from those who live elsewhere..

Not seeing the relevance of that. Don't think anyone disputes that. You know I'm not him right?? A little sensitive are we Sally?

no, the truth is that SOME of the south deserves the rep they get just as SOME of the rest of america deserves the same rap. the south has come a long way man, a long way and currently is as good or better than other areas. sadly, there is a lot of ignorance out there and picking on a certain region is a cop out.

I actually played high school ball with Lora Hinton's son and had no idea about his significance until he posted the article on facebook.

True. I'm from Boston and will tell you with no hesitation there is far more prejudice up there than what I've observed in the south.

I know it will burst your bubble, but listen to Randy Newmans "Rednecks" and learn about the greatness of blacks in the North and the enlightened people up there.
