Just out of curiousity, what other safety should have been All-American over Reid?

I was waiting for the Dutchtown folks to come in and defend him Look he's a great player and i wish him the best in the future but if you really think this season was AA worthy then this must be a real down year for Division 1 safeties Constantly took bad angles which lead to getting burned and went for big hits instead of solid tackling

So name another safety who didn't take bad angles and who had a season more All American worthy season? You can't just say, Reid doesn't deserve it without saying who should take his place.

Statistically, the kid from Fresno was the best Safety in the country. I'm not saying Reid wasn't deserving of AA honors though.

Compare that to the 2011 All American Safety Mark Barron. 68 tackles, 2 Int, 5 PBUs

And Barron whiffed on way more tackles than Reid

yeah the kid from Fresno, Matt Elam, Rambo and the kid from OU with 100+ tackles are the names that are also most often seen on the AA teams. it's really in the eye of the voters, and Reid's name recognition helped his cause. I'm cool with it, more DBU accolades to sell to recruits. and ultimately I don't think any of his bad plays cost us a game.

while it is a fair question, I think anoyone who disagrees with it should alos recognize that he made AA on the COACHES vote as well..in other words 99% of us (me included) do not know the game well enough to understand things like they do...he 100% deserved it THIS year and I am very happy for him...

By the same token I might want to know what your qualifications for judging him might be.

The problem is he didn't have 2 plays that everyone remembers this season like he had in one game against Bama last season. The hit on Richardson and the stolen INT are what really put him on the map. He played well this season, just had a few more memorable mistakes. Hard to say he's not an All-American when he would be a first round pick if he leaves

And # of tackles can be very misleading when judging a safety. Roman Harper always has a ton of tackles, and he's not a top 20 safety in the NFL. Sometimes it just means you play on a bad defense and get a lot of opportunities.

You don't think Roman Harper is top 20 amongst safeties? He's not at the very top but he did go to two recent pro bowls.

I understand this, but game film would tell you otherwise. To be quite honest I don't know how he made those. He's second best on his own team at this point. I am not an NFL talent scout, but I would say you could find 15-20 better than he is. He went over 2 full seasons without and INT. That's hard to do

But he is one of the better safeties against the run and also getting to the qb, I'll give him that

I just get a tad tired of a bunch of internet experts finding ways to bash players so so they can feel good about themselves.
speaking for myself, what I say about a player's performance in no way brings me pleasure. we're certainly not experts, but I'm sure many people here have played and watched enough football to have a qualified opinion about whether ER had an AA yr. bottom line...the kid is a class act and has had a remarkable career at LSU that, in many ways, was defined by his strip/interception at bama last yr. the #1 is on his jersey for a reason.

When it comes to All Americans on the defensive side of the ball, I look at the SEC and compare Reid to the other safetys. He was the 2nd best safety in the SEC this year behind UF Matt Elam. Elam is a stud.Best safety in football IMO. No other safetys this year really caught my eye except for Elam. Rambo is a good player, and so is that guy from Oklahoma. But I think Reid is better, not by much, but still better. Reid is still a good football player. Did he have a down year? Yes. Did he meet the expectations that everyone had for him? No. Is he still a good football player? Yes. And, he was on a lot of post season lists after his sophomore year and was on alot of peoples preseason list this year. He still was 3rd in tackles, on a big time defense with major talent. Do i think he had an all american type year? No. But, hes still 1 of the better safetys in college football. Plus, hes a great student thats actually going for a real major. Everyone in college football likes Reid.

Did I miss some part of this season where Eric Reid did something
In fact, you did. Like most fans, you judge a player by what you see on TV. In the case of a QB, your evaluation probably isn't terrible because you see him the whole time he's a factor. In the case of Eric Reid, you're probably judging him based on 6 or 8 plays. But the guy played about 700 plays. So, yes, you saw about 1% of what Reid did this year. If he jumped a route, forced the QB to pull the ball down, and it resulted in a sack by Mingo, you'd ballyhoo Mingo for All American and you'd have no idea it was Reid. Last year Reid took the ball from a Bama guy and turned that game around. This year he took a couple of bad angles and gave up a couple of TDs. So last year, AA, and this year, dog shite.
