yes, the University is a business. The AD is part of the University.
We agree here.

so do you believe each department, like biological sciences and OEVS should also keep their profits from grants? Afterall, they raise WAY more money from grants than does the AD.
Those departments use their grant money to fund their research, just like the athletic department uses its revenue to fund its espenses. The difference is the athletic department has money left over after its expenses, whereas the other departments don't. IF profits are made from that research by the biology or whatever department, yes, I think they should get to keep some of it, if they are saving it and re-investing it into their own future improvements, as the athletic department is.

lulzy. Money is best made to make more money if you have more of it. Think velocity of money as it relates to equations of scale. Why would you willingly divide such finances when pat of your organization is underwater?
Because the academic administrators clearly don't know how to raise and manage their money, while the athletic administrators do. That's part of why the academic side is underwater and the athletic side is booming. If the AD donated all their money to the university there wouldn't be anything left over for capital improvements, rainy day fund, etc. The university sure as hell isn't gonna give it back to them, because it won't be there anymore. It will already be spent.

Link to that business model?
You know there's no link, smartass. But clearly that is how it works in practical terms. Even you can acknowledge that. That's why we are arguing. You don't think it should work the way it does in real life.

The administrators hands are so tied down, it isn't even funny. They can't raise tuition behind a trivial amount, they can't let go of their faculty other than instructors making a fairly trivial amount, and their universities are basically the first line of cuts anytime the state has financial difficulties.

I am sorry, but I disagree with this position. You cant administrate around 30% budget cuts and maintain or improve performance. Certainly there is waste at LSU, just like every where, but the cuts keep coming and the Universities mission is hindered.

The only reason the Athletic Department makes money is because the football team is highly successful. If the football team falls into mediocrity then all the profits will disappear.

I am an LSU alumni, and I am glad LSU Athletics are strong. I am glad the AD is profitable. I wish the AD didnt have to give any money to the University. What frustrates me is that we have all these LSU fans, all this attendance at games, all this purchase of LSU shirts and hats and junk (which goes to the AD I guess), but at the same time the University gets strangled. Rather than defending this institution they are supposed to love, the response is: "Big government is bad. LSU is wasteful. LSU sucks anyway. Do more with less".

I know there is nothing most of you can do about it. But many or perhaps most of the posters in this thread seem happy that the University is being cut, and I cannot comprehend how that can be. I guess is political orthodoxy; where its more important to cut cigarette taxes than fund education. Geaux Tigers.
