Actually, that's not fair to drunk sailors. Unless something has changed since I left the NAV, when drunk sailors run out of money, they crawl back to the ship and sleep it off. If we could have kept drinking and left the tab for taxpayers, I'd probably have never left one of those islands!

Because the academic administrators clearly don't know how to raise and manage their money, while the athletic administrators do. That's part of why the academic side is underwater and the athletic side is booming.

I am sorry, but I disagree with this position. You cant administrate around 30% budget cuts and maintain or improve performance. Certainly there is waste at LSU, just like every where, but the cuts keep coming and the Universities mission is hindered.

The only reason the Athletic Department makes money is because the football team is highly successful. If the football team falls into mediocrity then all the profits will disappear.

I am an LSU alumni, and I am glad LSU Athletics are strong. I am glad the AD is profitable. I wish the AD didnt have to give any money to the University. What frustrates me is that we have all these LSU fans, all this attendance at games, all this purchase of LSU shirts and hats and junk (which goes to the AD I guess), but at the same time the University gets strangled. Rather than defending this institution they are supposed to love, the response is: "Big government is bad. LSU is wasteful. LSU sucks anyway. Do more with less".

I know there is nothing most of you can do about it. But many or perhaps most of the posters in this thread seem happy that the University is being cut, and I cannot comprehend how that can be. I guess is political orthodoxy; where its more important to cut cigarette taxes than fund education. Geaux Tigers.

You don't think that poor development and management by the academic administration is even part of the problem? That's all I am saying here, and I speak from very recent, very personal experience.

I agree with virtually everything else you wrote, BTW.

Yes certainly I agree with you. We could all do better. I don't have direct insight into main campus finances, but I do have insight into other campuses. Just the sheer size of LSU main campus creates inefficiency. The rumor was that Mike Martin was not very good, but its only a rumor for me.

But I do not think changing administration will magically turn things around, unless we completely reinvent LSU as a much smaller university. I dont believe you make a university stronger by simply cutting its funding.

My frustration is the indifferent or hostile attitude that so many express while simultaneously wearing LSU merchandise. If they hate LSU that is fine, but then they should wear Bama or A&M shirts.

With all due respect, this is similar to the argument that one cannot be a true Tiger fan and find fault with coaching performance. Each of those individuals you're angry at probably agrees with you in wanting a financially strong university, just as they want a successful athletic program. All will not agree, however, on how to get there or stay there.

I am guessing if you learned your trade as a "hobbyist" in middle and high schools, a college degree wasn't important for your field, anyway. It's like a contractor saying, "Med school was a waste of my time." Not putting down your profession (whatever it is) at all, but just because you didn't need that piece of paper doesn't mean others who want to go into different fields don't.

My field is Computer Science. I wrote basic to intermediate programs in middle and high school as a hobby. I learned less in class than I had using a few basic programming guides on websites online. I knew guys my age over the internet who were going to smaller schools around the country who were learning topics far ahead of me. CSC at LSU is a terrible, terrible program. I really wish I hadn't wasted my money going there in the first place.

I didn't particularly enjoy most classes outside of my major's core classes either. There are a few exceptions.

The University is being slowly strangled, and people who are supposed to be LSU fans have the gall stand on the sideline applauding. It makes me sick. I am happy that the Athletic Department is profitable, and LSU like most any organization could always be run more efficiently. But I cant understand how someone who loves LSU can enjoy watching the University be damaged.

maybe you should learn how to read before giving a lecture. I've already said the AD should be giving money to LSU. If you don't think there is significant waste at LSU, then I can't help you.

I would to see where I mentioned that I "enjoy watching the University be damaged"

i don't think anyone is happy that the University is being cut. You're seeing what you want to see instead of what is right in front of you.

has the athletic department been negatively impacted?
How much money is Duke, NC, Kentucky, Florida, UCLA, UConn, Texas, etc. putting into there basketball programs? Is it more than us?

Actual question not a flame.

I always thought it was to educate students in the not-for profit environment that a state university is supposed to be set up to be.
"Not For Profit" businesses/organizations still have a budget and a fiduciary responsibility to curb waste and run the business in a responsible, sustainable way. Needing an 8 million dollar contribution to keep the school budget floating is far from keeping your house in order. If there is that much of a short fall 4 years into this economic recession, someone on the LSU board really sucks at planning and implementation. I wonder how many of these college administrators have ever run a business or balanced a budget. Just because you are not trying to turn a profit does not give you cart blanche with the LSU academic budget.

I'm curious how much the "administration" of the university has grown in the past 20 years. Like how many university employees are there now compared to 20 years ago.

I think it is great that the AD donates this money to the overall University. Would those of you that object rather have them raise tuition? I worked as an accountant for another large state university in another state. Like any large organization, whether it be Federal, state or private, there is waste. Without even looking, I know there are way too many overpaid administrators and not enough teachers. Way too many research grants and not enough people who are helping students be all they can be. It is the way of the world. Accept it or do something about it.

That's incorrect... The way I read the article is that LSU's athletic Department had 26.5 million in profits (18.3 + 8.2) and they had donated the 8.2 to the university. Therefore if that's the way it was computed then it would be 8.2/26.5 approximately 31%.

Another way to look at this is LSU athletic department was going to give 7.2 million to the University regardless for anything under 3 million in profit. The 7.2 million is considered an expense to the Athletic Department. So that means LSU athletic department had a surplus of 19.3 million and they chose to give 1 million of that surplus back to the University. So that equates to 5%.
