re: LSU Athletic Department donated 45% of its 2012 profits to the University

It's great that LSU (Athletics) is in a position to help LSU (Academics). However, one of the potential problems I see is that all (public) universities in Louisiana are facing budgets shortfalls and cuts, and not all have a profit generating athletic dept. to get extra funding from. What happens when the UL's, McNese, NSU, etc. complain that it's unfair that their schools have to make cuts while LSU is supplemented by the athletic dept.? It's feasable that the legislature will look to send more tax dollars their way (away from LSU). LSU will then become reliant on the supplemental fuding from the AD for their annual budget, not just a temporary life-line in a tough economic climate.

It is my understanding that you get state money based on your enrollment and institution type. Research institutions get more from the state I believe and the more students you have the more money you get. I don't think you can pick and choose who gets more money. This is just what I have heard in the past.

The only way to change this whole thing is to let these institutions charge what they want for tuition. Presidents have very little control when it comes to major decisions. If they were allowed to act more like businesses the state would have less of a burden.

It would shift to the students.

Yes, let's just redistribute the wealth into mediocrity to the detriment of the athletic program's continued success.

I like you... but this is dumb

To be fair there is still significant waste at LSU A&M.

frick you

I'm well aware of the shitiness that is LSU A&M

and frick you too.

The University is being slowly strangled, and people who are supposed to be LSU fans have the gall stand on the sideline applauding. It makes me sick. I am happy that the Athletic Department is profitable, and LSU like most any organization could always be run more efficiently. But I cant understand how someone who loves LSU can enjoy watching the University be damaged.

They are searching for a University President, perhaps you should apply for the job. I am sure they will be overwhelmed by your brilliance.

There is significant waste in your household finances. You could easily have the same lifestyle with 30% less, but you are lazy. I suggest you donate 30% to the charity of your choice and make the world a better place.

Your evidence of significant waste is signs and the bookstore. Yes, you indeed should be candidate for LSU president.

You're an idiot

Maybe it's just me, but I actually applaud the way LSU Athletics handled this. It's about time.

Now...everybody carry on with the bickering about how wasteful the university is. I agree with the criticism, by the way.

According to Mark Ewing, the LSU athletic department’s chief financial officer, LSU’s $18.3 million profit came before the department donated approximately $8.2 million to the academic side of the university.

why not donate 100% of the profits?

Aren't profits the money left over after realizing operating costs? Why do they need to keep, "profits"

Excellent timing by LSU to release those numbers Today, the state will meet this afternoon to determine how much of a shortfall the state is in and how much to cut education. It's been rumored another 200M.

I've loved LSU for the athletics for years, but the education I got there was garbage. I had self-taught myself much more about my field as a hobbyist from age 12-18 that I just dropped out. I wasn't going to waste more years of my life and thousands of dollars just for a piece of paper.

That's not to say that that I want to watch the University be damaged. I just never saw it as anything special to begin with. It's hard to get upset about it.

Officials from BR to Washington have forgotten how to control themselves and not spent money they don't have. But somehow when it's other peoples money they are responsible for, they spend like 'drunk sailors' and go crazy.

Actually, that's not fair to drunk sailors. Unless something has changed since I left the NAV, when drunk sailors run out of money, they crawl back to the ship and sleep it off. If we could have kept drinking and left the tab for taxpayers, I'd probably have never left one of those islands!

And the education I got there was outstanding. It prepared me for success at a top tier law school and helped me land a great job. It was also instrumental in my social development.

I am guessing if you learned your trade as a "hobbyist" in middle and high schools, a college degree wasn't important for your field, anyway. It's like a contractor saying, "Med school was a waste of my time." Not putting down your profession (whatever it is) at all, but just because you didn't need that piece of paper doesn't mean others who want to go into different fields don't.

Those of us who did stick it out and get our degrees and are proud of them do see it as something special and do get upset about it.

Incredible. And yet people will still complain about the state of affairs between the AD and University.

then obviously they are charging us way too much for season tickets and TAF fees.
