You didn't give me a quality response. You moved the goalposts. You talked about the actions of people, I talked about philosophies found in books. You really need to just stop.

In the OP you stated "Another parallel I see is illusion of choice (which isn't really a separate parallel, but one that ties into the last one). Not only does our political system repel the truly great men, just like Idol repels musicians with a certain nature. It puts a certain few on a pedestal and pumps them up as the next big thing and we vote. We're voting on people thinking we're choosing between great ability, but the real talent was filtered out of the equation by the game itself." I am following up on this statement. I believe my point is clear unless you are suggesting that there was never a time when great men (women) pursued political office.

That is what he's suggesting. He's just ignoring the Ciceros, Caesars, and Churchills of the world.

I could really care less if you don't believe what I've read. And those 'actions of people' are actually a result of their philosophies. Che is okay with killing, his philosophy on life permits it. Scott grimaces at two men fighting, his philosophies have lead him to that feeling.

You've asked me if I think there was a time that great people pursued office.. I'm missing where there is a point. Or what it might have to do with what you quoted.

If you are unable to comprehend and answer a straightforward question that is based on your originaly post then you are simply trolling.

Well, I did answer your question about past politicians. If you're unable to see it in this thread, I'm sorry.

Mogray - repelling is something you do down a cliff or a hillside. Perhaps someone pointed this out. A Want - gave the best description of American Idol and the problem with it. Mogray - you just opened a thread based on a real clunky comparison/analogy to make a not very insightful point. For the most part there is nothing really extraordinary about the times "you" live in. Since the beginning of radio there have been as successful and shallow shows as American Idol. Since for ever politics has been an unsavory enterprise. Fortuantely the truly great men are the ones with vision and character get in and get dirty. There's nothing great about someone who thinks he is above it all. Trust me Bob Dylan or Woody would not be on Idol but both were very shrewd when it came to self promotion. "I think Bob Dylan might work better than Bob Zimmerman?" Mogray, you're very young. Don't invest so much in talented musicians - the good ones are the first to tell you they don't know shite.

This is hilariously inconsistent and irrelevant to any point I made in this thread.

I used the term 'giants' not because they're liked by a certain amount of people, but because they're liked by a lot of significant people in entertainment. The real people in the music industry and touring bands usually have good taste. It's kind of like a 'players choice award'.. the people working in music think very highly of bands like my morning jacket and deer tick. The recognize their influences come from greats of the past. You can hear townes van zandt in a lot of deer tick, you can hear a lot other stuff too. I hate trying to explain it all, it rarely comes out the way I intend. I was going to go on about Jim James and John McCauley impressive side projects, their tribute albums to legends like Jon Prine and Woody Guthrie, and other stuff like playing at the White House.. But here's is a clip from an American Dad episode that is a tribute to my morning jacket, it's a good episode if you want to find the full episode somewhere. LINK
