Soccer has been the sport of the future for 30 years. Maybe it will pass baseball, but I kind of doubt it.

What people underrate about soccer is that it has a distressingly high injury rate as well. It's not head injuries, so that's good, but if a soccer tournament is coming to your town, avoid the local emergency rooms that weekend. Hell, I played hockey and lacrosse, and the sport in which I suffered a horrific knee injury was soccer.

Soccer will never be big in this country until they get the top players during the primes of their careers. Americans don't support second-rate sports products. It's hard to get behind a league like MLS when we get to watch the best football, basketball, hockey, and baseball players in the world on a weekly basis.

I don't think it's a very big if.

Football is more popular today than it ever has been. Despite the lockout and rule changes, its popularity is going up, not down.

Youth rugby is one of the fastest growing sports out there, and with the sevens version of the game being in the 2016 Olympics, it can blow up.

Fastest growing doesn't mean it will continue on its linear path.

I just don't see sports where you do THIS is going to blow up in inner city schools. Not saying that football doesn't have similar moments, but it lasts less time and football is more about hitting than grappling.

I do hope I'm wrong and it blows up. Rugby would be a fantastic sub for football.

A great first step would be to mandate wrapping up in tackles.

Yes, but this would inevitably lead to higher scoring games and fans calling out "pussification of football" when a ref calls a flag for a hit tackle instead of a wrap up.

No doubt. But the peak comes before the fall.

I think what we're going to see in football is a continuation of our current trend: we love watching it, but upper and middle class parents will discourage their kids from playing it. Eventually, it will be a game played almost entirely by the underclass for the enjoyment of a ticket buying public who has never played the game.

If soccer removed goalies, gave 7 points for a goal, and 3 points for a shot over the crossbar, all of America would love it.

I like it the way it is. The beautiful game.

I think it has to be soccer. Soccer in the US has grown astronomically since 10 years ago. Finally seeing games being covered by ESPN. But in order for soccer to become big you will have to attain those big time players while they are in the prime of their careers. This can take a while due to how long the other clubs in Spain and England have been around but is possible and I believe it will happen but couldn't put a time on it.

Not too far from what we have now.

My worry is that the league and colleges will start changing rules to the point it no longer is an enjoyable game to watch. There's a reason nobody likes arena football or rugby on a national scale.

IF, however, they make the players sign releases and contracts not to sue, then i could see your scenario happen.

Also, most kids want to imitate the sports guys they look up to. If they know there's no change at playing football, then popularity could swing to MMA or boxing levels.

I hope it is soccer, could you imagine this country getting into soccer the way they are invested in football?! Would be very exciting..

The MLS plan for growth is prefect, a slow steady progression in regards to finances and the salary cap. Nothing like euro leagues that are similar to MLB

already HUGE. TV revenue isn't as much money as football but when's the last time you've been to a football game with 200K+ people in the stands

I've come to realize that all NASCAR races are a weekend party whereas many college/NFL tailgates aren't worth a dam

I know I'll get laughed out of the building, but if they tweaked the rules to Ultimate Frisbee, it really could be an awesome sport (already is IMO). People already play it all over the world, and it would be great during the summer months here in the US (while there is no football or basketball....June-August).

Can you imagine Calvin Johnson going up against Andre Johnson 1-on-1......or Reggie Bush guarding Darren Sproles

Not many fricks are given about nascar outside of the south.

I want to imagine, but seeing a gigantasaur 6'6 230 lb 4.3 running receiver going up for a frisby is just hilarious.

The sevens version of the game will certainly be able to explode in the inner cities.

Sevens, I could definitely see a possibility. It's just hard to see black kids getting into rugby, unless they change they unis. no way they wear those Larry bird-like shorts.

I'm not laughing at the idea. It's all in what we're accustomed to. Most are just not accustomed to frisby being anything other than leisurely.
