If nothing else competition created by a new league would cause the NFL to buckle up it's own chin strap and get real about the game. Hopefully, over the long run the NFL would improve.

Very true, but whos gonna play in it? XFL,UFL rosters were mostly filled with has been players, players from small schools, UDFAs, etc.

Lets say Johnny Football decides to leave early in two years when a new league starts.

"I can play in the NFL and make $20m, or the Saints Talk Football League and make $1m. Hmmm, decisions, decisions...."

Shit, a back like Earl Campbell couldn't even exist in today's NFL.

They'd fine him every weekend for trying to kill defenseless DBs.

Dude, you must not know anything about the former USFL and who they had playing and for how much.
A new league would have to pay more to attract players. If the money is there they will follow - they already do that.
I'm not going to be able to give specifics but the question was asked if there's room for a new league - by the responses I'd say there is a fair amount of folks that would be interested.

Most second and third string guys when their contract runs up would like the idea of starting over rifing the bench, alot of older vets, alot of young undrafted kids to start. If it built up any popularity the NFL would shite itself. And it would change and they would integrate. But the point is it would spur change.

And if you could lure away one or two, just one or two, big named stars and a couple big named rookies each year it would be successful.

The USFL had every game broadcast on ESPN. The salary cap in the USFL in 1984 was 1.8 million dollars. The avg NFL players salary was $105,000 in 1983. It jumped 25% in 1984, due to competition from the USFL.

Today, the avg nfl player makes $1.1 million. NFL has billion dollar TV deals with ESPN, NBC, Fox, and CBS. Todays marquee players like Steve Young and Reggie White in the USFL days will cost you $15mil or more per year.

Two questions:
#1. Who are you going to find that would be willing to put the money into a league that could afford to offer competitive salaries to players?
#2. How are you going to entice a network to televise your games for a product that will, as we have said, directly compete with the NFL and risk the ire of NFL brass?

The internet can solve this problem rather easily.

Rich people who cant buy a team, but want one, or current owners who are pissed.

h, and you can't mention Limbaugh as the source of the comment. People's vaginas are still sore that he was spot on that the bigots and social engineers saw to it that McNabb got more credit than he was due.

As the QB he might have gotten too much credit/blame - as MOST QBs do. However, a team doesn't make it to 4 straight conference championship games and 1 Super Bowl without having a legit QB. With McNabb Eagles won 10+ games 7/10 years and had only 1 losing season.

I think that goes beyond racially motivated media hype and social engineering.

If you think McNabb in his prime was a shite QB an not worth anything or given too much credit, i really dont know what to say.

The idea that kickoffs will cease to happen is something that, 3 years ago, seemed laughable. Now, it's sadly plausible.

And next...write this down...quarterbacks will not be allowed to be sacked. Red Jerseys and 2 hand touch. The sack as we know it will also cease to exist.

I don't see how you could make that conclusion from my comments. Please elaborate.

there were similar statements being made on ESPN radio last night on the evening shows, akin to the Rush statement. He's not that far off base.

I agree with him. The NFL is on a downward spiral and I'm not sure it will ever recover. Roger Goodell just doesn't seem to understand that there is NO way to make the game of football 100% safe, but he's going to keep pursuing change in an effort to do so.

He should leave the game alone, have players sign waivers stating they know what they're getting into. Someone is going to play, it's way too much money and fame.

I think the timing couldn't be better for a second league. Call it "Old School Football League" or something.

But who is a major football fan will the necessary coin to start a football league to compete with the NFL?
