I think Paul's Boutique was viewed as a let down upon release and is now viewed as their best record (Beastie Boys)

Fables did fine. Saw the tour.

How about Nick Drake? He qualifies for this thread.

Fables was well-received and was their best seller to that date. But man, Bill Berry and Michael Stipe have spent 20 years bashing the shite out of this album. They're wrong. It's great.

I'll say Fugazi's End Hits. It was their most poorly reviewed albums, but man... the thing is nigh on perfect and is probably my favorite album of theirs aside from The Argument. It was just people resisting them going in a new direction.

Magical Mystery Tour the film was criticized (perhaps rightfully) but the album has great music. For it to have been received poorly by any critic is hard to believe.

GNR Lies was poorly received, yet was definitely a great album.

Hootie's second album was better than the first.

Recovering the Satellites was AT LEAST as good as August and Everything After

i always hear this album isn't very good, but it's one of my favorites...

but my choice would be Chris Cornell's solo album produced by Timberland, i love it and i think it just didn't find a audience b/c it's a weird hybrid.

Miles Davis "In A Silent Way"

Panned by critics because of the electronic instrumentation used on it, it is now regarded as a classic and the prototype for the jazz-fusion genre.

Maybe I understand this. Maybe I don't. When I was still buying their albums, I remember never placing this one in their best. The reason? The bad songs are just really bad.

Looking back on it, the good is so good that it's hard for me not to put it right there with any in the pre-Document phase of the band. It has, IMHO, the best song they ever recorded.

Not an album but a single worth mention on this thread. Ike and Tina Turner's River Deep, Mountain High.

Produced by Phil Spector, who was convinced it was a #1 the record was deemed too soulful for white radio and too white for black stations.

One of the all-time great singles.

My album is Slayer's Divine Intervention. It's their first with Lombardo on the drums and a lot of fans aren't fond of it. I absolutely love it. I think it's better than Reign in Blood, which IMO is a bunch of filler bookended by greatness.
