re: Poodles for hunting

I was attacked last year by a vicious toy poodle. Left a mark on my calf. I have PTSD now, and shudder at the sight of poodles. This thread just made me piss myself.

We had a dog whose mother was a brown poodle but he looked just like a small black lab which is what we assume the father was. That dog had an incredible nose on him and was great at killing small game like groundhogs, squirrels, cats, and a neighbor's pet racoon. Really smart dog as well. I can understand why Labradoodles are a popular breed.

I understand.

But the converse can be true too. I don't care if the thing is the most handsome dog in the world, if I have to get my arse out of the blind to get a duck I will be a pissed owner.

Did you hit it with your disc purse?

Nah, that was before my disc golf obsession.

I had a 10# catfish on, and the dog bit me while reeling.
I considered punting it into the pond, but the guy's wife was watching.

Not really outdoor related at all but this story was awesome in its day. Sometimes real life imitates The Onion

re: Poodles for hunting

OK, I'm here. I have 2 poodles, Claude (10) and Sophie (1). Back in Claude's prime he was fast as shit, and Sophie can jump higher than any dog I've seen.

I sent Sophie to the (reputedly) best hunting dog trainer in South LA. My grandpa said she was training hunting dogs back in his day too. We left her there for 2 months. Now, she only goes outside/inside when we give her permission; if we tell her to stay, then she wont move until we say so; we can throw an object and she won't fetch until we say "go" and she won't bring it back unless we signal. She's like a robot. She is just all around obedient as shite. Very smart girl. The trainer's husband is a big time hunter and told me to try and train her to get used to a gun so i could bring her with me. He said she would be an ideal hunting dog, and that he never thought he'd say that for a poodle. I really wish I had taken Claude to this woman when he was young.

I remember reading somewhere that poodles were one of the first hunting dogs. Don't know if it's true, but I could totally see it. They're smart, obedient, and great retrievers. If you keep their coats short (like I do mine) I don't see why it wouldn't work. Once Sophie's a bit older, I'd like to take her shooting to see if she could get used to shooting. If so, I'd try and take her out to the blind.

Here are some videos for fun:

I had one about like the ones pictured and that damn dog loved to hunt birds. I used him for quail in the field and he was great at it.

He was just a family pet and I just randomly discovered his talent.

re: Poodles for hunting

My aunt got a labradoodle a few years back. The guy who breeds them trains labs and standard poodles for field trials. He told her he gets a ton of requests for standard poodles from up north for this purpose.

As a side note, the labradoodle was smart but stubborn as shite.
