Remember a lot of UT fans being kind of nonchalant about our hire. Nowhere near the loss we'd see it as if he left us today.

Most thought he was pretty solid, but also heard a lot of gripes about 3rd and Chavis as well.

I know we had some prevent type issues late in halfs this year, but I've never felt like third down lapses have been a weakness under Chief.

Just curious as to what people think is the difference here.

Sure we've got good athletes, but they were never lacking those at UT when he was there.

Is it just a better fit? The rest of the staff? Just gotten better with age/experience/perspective?

TIA for any input

Hell yes. Much better all around talent too.

ETA: He never had an entire D that was stacked with talent. He always had a few big names, but the depth here is crazy.

There is a rumor here in TN that their are considerations to bring him back as the Head Coach if they continue to be rejected by Charlie Strong and other current successful HCs.

I am not sure he is better. Did you see those defenses in the 90s? I think the UT fans were like that because they were ready for change from the Fulmer regime in general

Very much so. Just as Saban is better at Bama.

More years on the job is better.

The problems in the latter years at UT was Fulmer's recruiting or lack there of.

Tennessee's Total Defensive rankings under Chavis from 1999 to 2008:

1999: 11th, (3rd in the SEC)
2000: 13th, (2nd in the SEC)
2001: 13th, (2nd in the SEC)
2002: 5th, (2nd in the SEC)
2003: 22nd, (4th in the SEC)
2004: 45th, (7th in the SEC)
2005: 7th, (3rd in the SEC)
2006: 50th, (8th in the SEC)
2007: 70th, (11th in the SEC)

2008: 3rd, (1st in the SEC)

Couldn't find the rankings prior to the 99 season. He had a few rough years toward the end, but for the most part, his defenses were legit

yes. he also had cooper as a db coach and has haley as a dl coach. add that he has better players. at ut, they lost their #1 georgia recruiter (garner) and spurrier ran them out of south carolina. both states were fulmers biggest recruiting grounds and it ended up getting fulmer and chavis fired.

Thanks for all the input.

This is the type of info I was looking for.

I know overall the talent is better here, and I agree his assistants are probably better here is well.

Also agree that some UT fans just wanted change at that point, although like another poster said, be careful what you wish for

I really think Chief has found the perfect fit here, just like Miles.

Hope this crew is around for years to come!!

I think that 98 defense was top 5 in the nation, and maybe even #1.
