ok, i didn't see/hear the comment:
--can u tell me if he sounded like he
was saying that
he's "lucky to have more opportunities than others/minorities" type of thing
or
did it sound clearly like "i'm better because i'm white"?

- i def would like to know if UT has a star player that dumb and/or bigoted.

It was an awkward statement but if you watched the entire segment, you'd have to realize he was both nervous and emotional. I believe what he was trying to say was that he had a better path to success as a "white American male" than others may have and it would be a waste if he didn't work to achieve his dreams. One couldn't honestly believe the statement was bigoted. As a matter of fact, one of his guests was a black veteran from the Wounded Warrior Project.

I'd imagine he'll clarify what he meant to say in the near future

As far as being dumb or bigoted, he didn't seem to be neither. Nervous, emotional, and uneasy in the national spotlight of an awards show, absolutely.

Given the context of the award and the award show it'd be pretty awkward no matter the ethnicity.

Is it wrong? To be proud of being a white American male? Am I missing something?

Sal got it right.

Saying he had more opportunity than some and was thankful and had responsibility to take advantage of those.

Nothing wrong with that IMO

That's what I'm saying. To me it would be awkward if anyone of any race said that in his position.

Some people laugh nervously during awkward moments. Hope he was tongue tied and his statement was just fodder for idle ranters.

American - you are born here. Thank your parent and this nation.
Male - Thank your poppy. He contributed the Y.
White - Thanks your parents.
You had no part in the thing you are trying to be proud of. You are part of the majority. Be thankful.

Oh GTFO with this shite. The dude was getting choked up and crying during his speech. The guy had two wounded veterans with him, one of which was black. He was a frickin Green Beret thats been fighting for your freedom so that you can sit behind your keyboard calling other people a racist.

Yeah, I've never gotten behind the "I'm proud to be [insert attribute I possess which I did not cause]

It really sounds pretty stupid. I didn't accomplish being an American, why the hell would I be proud of it?

But that's beside the point because I believe he used the word "privileged" and not "proud".

He said "I'm just proud to be an American" near the end of his speech. I would say that a Green Beret who has been fighting for us has earned the right to say that without someone saying it sounds stupid.

Long Snapper for UT that won a college football award last night. I believe it was a courage award. He was a Green Beret who fought in the Middle East.
