I never said he hadn't accomplished anything. But he didn't say anything about being proud of that stuff. He said that he was proud of something he didn't cause.

No, didn't mean you had not accomplished anything in life. Wasn't intending for it be ugly even, just was making the assumption that you had not gone to war for the country. I was speaking in terms of military activity only. I have done absolutely nothing either on that front.

I am going to assume you watched this award ceremony. The dude was lost for words the whole time, was nervous, and was crying. He clearly didn't know what to say next and most of us in this forum would have shite in our pants had we been expected to speak at that ceremony last night. So, yes what he said sounded silly, but saying what he said was racist or anything else is riduiculous (not saying you said it was racist either).

I watched his entire story, but I didn't catch all of the speech after he was awarded. I missed the part where he said he was proud to be an American.

Speaking as perhaps the worst public speaker in every class I've ever taken, his speech was probably an oratory masterpiece compared to what I would have done.
But, it's a public venue and he should be open to critique like anyone else. I agree that people are digging WAY to much to try to be offended by what he said, and my post wasn't really a jab at him. It was directed at this general idea that we have to be proud of things like ethnicity, country of origin, etc.

It wasn't racist. It was quite the opposite. I'm just surprised he decided to go there.
He basically said that his accomplishment and recognition that night are attributable to his being a white American male, as opposed to the other guys in the room who didn't have what he had (because they are black.)
Again, he was very nervous and rambling a bit, but that was the gist of his point. That white American males are more privileged than those African American males in the room who were being recognized. He was using that point, in essence, to modestly accept his award.
