Yes atheist's do. Dont kid yourself. Anything Christmas related gets attacked every year, same old story. People get their feelings hurt by inanimate objects. Here's an idea, you can have a "winter solstice tree", and I'll enjoy my Christmas tree.

You got anything to support this? I think followers of different religions have contributed more to the decline of Christmas images.

No, Bill O'Reily...it doesn't.

Not when they're on private property. Like, for instance...this apartment complex.

Nah...I'm gonna stick with my Christmas Tree and secular traditions, and you can continue to secular up the holiday just like the rest of us while preaching about how much it's REALLY all about Jesus' birthday.

I thought there were 2 meanings to Christmas, one being about Jesus, the other being secular ie Santa, so Jesus and Santa, which one is a Christmas tree associated with?

Neither, really. The bringing in of evergreens was done by people during the winter as a symbol of the soon to be warming up and greening of the landscape again. It was later co-opted by the church, after being considered pagan and shunned for quite a while, and is now part of the tradition.

I LOOOOOOVE Christmas!! Despite the fact that what must be 1/2 of my neighbors feel the need to plop "Keep christ in Christmas" signs all over their yards, I'm perfectly happy to secular it up and enjoy Christmas the way most Americans do. Lights, tree, garlands and wreaths, christmas music (even the religious songs!), get togethers, great food, gifts, etc. Some how I manage to enjoy the season without once believing any of the backstory. I'd bet good money that this crap didn't get taken down because Richard Dawkins was out lurking behind the bushes trying to yank down the tree like the damn Grinch. This reads like a corporate wank making a silly call...
we talked about this yesterday, I am not a christmas fan. Something about my father moving out on christmas eve has a little something to do with that. Its not really the jesus thing that bothers me so much, the materialism is a bigger issue to me at least. I don't like having religion stuffed down my throat, but that is tacky asswipes more than the religion.

If anyone should be banning Christmas trees, it should be Christians, (like England did, and the original colonies that settled Ameruca, and hell, anyone with the courage to stand up for Christianity) Since Christmas trees are pagan in origin and have zero to do w/Jesus...why would Atheists have a prob with it?

What "materialism" bothers you so much? You are materialistic. The fact that you are posting on here proves that. You own a computer.

I do not like that much of the holiday revolves around the acquisition of goods. I have friends and family that are adults, and publish christmas lists. What you should give them, etc. I find it quite shallow and materialistic. Merely owning possessions, including a computer, does not make one materialistic. Economic materialism is more associated with conspicuous consumption, than just owning things. Now, if I had written, Hey I am against materialism as I write this on my new mac air, hey look at me I have a mac air, I am so cool. Then yes, calling me materialistic would be appropriate. And anyway, I am writing this on my work computer, although the monitor is mine.

Did the Germans use trees as "religious symbols"...as indicated by the question in the thread title? Druids did. Which is why I mentioned them.

LINK Seriously if you are an atheist why are you offended by a tree or a symbol of what you don't believe in in the first place?
. Especially when it is a pagan symbol. Jeremiah 10: 2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs of the people [are] vain: for [one] cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. 4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
