.308 Winchester The .308 Winchester was the result of a U.S. Army requirement for a .30 caliber cartridge designed for use in machine guns as well as a selective fire main battle rifle. Winchester and military designers used the .300 Savage as a starting point and the eventual result, introduced to the civilian market in 1952, was the .308 Winchester. In 1954 the new cartridge was adopted by NATO as 7.62mm NATO. The .308 cartridge, with its standard .473" rim diameter but short 2.810" COL set the standard for what became the very popular "short action" bolt rifle. Eventually even magnum cases with .532" diameter rims were adapted to short action rifles, as detailed in the section above
Yep, I'm wrong. I read it somewhere but my info was wrong.

mspill,

i want something with great power as i never shoot over 150 yards where i hunt. give me some of yalls opinions please.
Your 7-08 is already a GREAT 150 yard (and acutally beyond) whitetail deer gun. If you just want to get a new gun, that's one thing (and very understandable as most everyone gets the wanderlust for a new gun every now and then). OTOH, DON'T get a new gun expecting to get improved performance over your 7-08. None of the guns you mentioned (nor any 6.5mm-35 caliber short/long/ultra long/super short/really short magnums) is going to kill that whitetail any more dead than will the 7-08. Having said that, if you want a new gun, just get something that can be used someday on dream _______ (fill in the blank w/ whatever is your dream) hunt.

The .308 is nothing more than a 300 Savage with a lengthened neck for better feeder and seating of boat tail bullets. The 300 Savage was nothing more than a shortened 30-06 designed to fit in the Savage 99 and take advantage of advances in powders and get. 30-06 performance in 150 grain bullets in the shortened case. And of course, the 30-06 was nothing more than a slight lengthening of the German 7.92x57 with an all American .30 caliber bullet instead of the German 8 mm.
