The last 2 SEC Qb's to win the Heisman were what you would call dual threat. Another will do it this year.

I think it's beneficial in college to at least have escapability from the pocket. I want a guy who's gonna sit back and look to throw it but can bail last second if the play breaks down. That's where mett is lacking. If nobody is open or the play breaksdown , chances are he gets sacked.

re: Retting / Jennings

I haven't seen these guys but I've heard the chatter.

The impression I get is that Jennings has a good, but not great arm, but what sets him apart is his decision making ability. Simply put, he usually makes the right decision about where to put the ball, and has enough arm to get it there.

The impression I get from Rettig is that he is a lot like Mett, a stand-up rocket launcher.

Is this accurate?

he was cast from the Dan mould...Marino and Fouts.

I could be wrong, but he seems to stand flat-footed in the pocket. if so, coaches need to get him to practice heels up. it does wonders for footwork, release and improves your first step.

geaux Mett.

And LSU fans will hate him.

The problem is Mett has a pretty slow release.
Those guys had 2 of the quickest releases of all time, which negated their immobility.

Jennings isnt dual threat. Dual threat reminds me more of guys like rs or randall. Not as polished of a passer, and deadly with their feet.

Both qbs are impressive, but its not like we havent had other 4 star qbs that looked promising in high school.

Dual threat carries such a negative meaning for so many on here.

Some prior dual threat quarterbacks:
Robert Griffin, III
Cam Newton
Rick Stanzi
Jake Locker
Zac Robinson
Chase Daniel
Case McCoy
Teddy Bridgewater
Vince Young
Tim Tebow

Also, the last dual threat QB who started a game at QB for LSU was in the SEC Championship and he was the player of the game.

I'll be honest. I haven't been this excited about signing a QB since Russell and Flynn (and kind of Zach Lee knowing he could leave). And I think these two are probably better all together than those two. IMHO

That is usually correct in the pros, but the college game is dfferent. The defenses are not as complex and arm strength is not as important.

RG3 is an exception to the rule in the pros.

Considering how bad Tebow is in the pros, I am suprised at how good he was in college. Being surrounded by great talent at florida is probably the reason--both offense and defense.

They are both very solid prospects. What's surprising about both is that they can both do things you don't expect. Jennings is defined as a dual-threat but he looks to pass first and is very good throwing the ball. Rettig is a pro-style but he has pretty good wheels for a big kid, he's very similar to Matt Flynn only a few inches taller and a bigger arm. Jennings I'd say is similar to Tahj Boyd in many aspects, maybe not as big of an arm. I think it'll end up being very similar to the Russell - Flynn years.

point taken....but, the more Mett settled in to his reads and SEC game speed the quicker his release became. Marino and Fouts probably had recognition issues the first time they said, "Hut..Hut" at the college level. just sayn'

smack the bad kitty.

I just viewed both of their hudl video highlights and they both look very good. What concerns me is what did they look like on the non highlight plays and can they upconvert to the big time of major college football. You just never know.

I have been following Rettig more closely this year on some of his highlights and he really impresses me at this stage of his development. He is not a runner but is mobile and appears to be able to throw on a roll out comfortably. He has an excellent command of the timing routes (i.e. slants and WR screens). But most of all he already has the ablilty to throw the ball deep and wide. One highlight he hit a 40 yd pass on a go route to the sideline from the opposite hash. Kid has a cannon already.

re: Retting / Jennings

I've seen Jennings play twice against my sons high school , McEachern HS which is one of the top 6A programs in the state.
By comparison Marietta HS is a middle of the pack 6A school. They had some decent players around him but he was pretty much the whole show.
Both times it was clear that he was the best athlete on the field. What impressed me the most was his poise and focus. When plays broke down he was able to scramble to avoid the rush, set his feet and find a receiver down field again and again. He is a very good runner and took quite a few shots. When our players got chippy he never responded just kept playing. Nothing phased him.

In this past years game he led his team to what should have been a game winning TD drive but the Marietta defense couldn't hold and gave up the go ahead score with a min. left . In the last min, despite several OL penalties and WR drops he managed to get his team to our 40 yard line before time ran out. I have no doubt if he had another min to work with Marietta would have won that game.

My point is in addition to his obvious athletic skill this is a kid with a good head on his shoulders and a real competitor. I have to think that if you put this kid on a team with our kind of talent around him he has the chance to be a very special player. I can't wait to see him in purple and gold.

ETA: Looks like Les and Kragthorpe were in town yesterday and met with him and his family at Henry's In Acworth. Looks like his commitment is solid. Les is doin' work.

Great post always nice to have someone who actually has seen the kid play come on and tell us what he saw. It would be really nice to have a true dual threat back at LSU. With the defenses in the SEC having to scheme for a kid that can escape pressure and get to the edge, but is a passer plain and simple is just that much harder to play against. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Newton, Tebow, Manziel just to name a few.
