eta: i wouldn't be surprised if someone leaked that shite on purpose as a way to see public reaction to the name

Some were wondering if this was the case versus a coincidence with Kobe, 30k.

The official announcements for this usually happen after the season, so Kobe was the logical choice.

Just watched Channel 4. Stern says that he will support a name change , and there have been SEVERAL registered. But, premature at this time despite the breaking news that the name will become the Pelicans.....stay tuned...

What's he supposed to say? You got it?

As far as prematurely goes, multiple people now are reporting this is what ownership wants. There is a process to go through, however, so it's not locked in, could change. That's not premature. It's the truth, but that can change. I'm not hungry, then I am hungry. Neither is a lie or untrue at the moment. To construe it as `done' is premature. To say there is a will, this is the goal, etc. is not. Right?

Where there's smoke there's fire, I agree.

But... It may not be too far fetched that they put the name out there to test the market.

I interpreted it that the name Pelicans may be premature.

Testing the market is a good idea.

Is this the best way to test the market? With leaks? I don't think so. Is it what they did? Maybe. I think that is less likely than it just having been leaked, but that's just me.

One of many ways imo no reason they couldn't have done a leak among other unseen market test. And even they didn't I doubt there upset that it happened.

You had national sports talk shows and the social media ablaze discussing this thing from late last night to all day today.

Not only that but you had people nationally and locally discussing several possible names and expressing how they feel about them seems like a win to me.

I don't see why you think that leaking the name to the media is a bad way to test it. You got an immediate reaction about the name from media and basketball fans across the country in a matter of minutes. It's a very efficient way to judge how your new name will be perceived, at least initially.
