Let's just agree to disagree. Some of us believe someone could have helped. Others believe it would be foolish to help.
No one said throw yourself in front of the train to help him. Two people could have simply grabbed his hand and pulled in less time than 22 seconds.
Maybe not. Perhaps 22 seconds is too little time to grab a hand a pull. Who knows?
Some people believe that all of the unknown factors make it perfectly acceptable to allow someone to die. I believe that many people in everyday life across the world help others in situations very similar to this. How was this situation any different?
I guess that "special someone" - that "hero" - wasn't in the subway that day. That sucks for the victim, especially when the victim was standing up to a thug for harrassing fellow pedestrians. No one returned the favor in his time of need.
We just disagree. That's all.

its not 22 seconds. humans dont react that fast even if they're trained SEALs or Ninjas. lets be realistic..probably 5-10 seconds max after your brain comprehends what just happened and you decide to act.
so you consider a dude who's head is barely above the concrete an easy task to 'pull up'..
..oh and there's a 15 ton subway barreling towards you that will be there in 10 seconds

No one said it would be easy. It's the lack of any effort at all that's surprising. The photo clearly shows zero effort from anyone...unless you believe the shopping photographer's story.
I don't.
But we just disagree.
(24 second post - 10 seconds spent pondering what I'd say - 14 seconds typing - felt like forever)

good samaritan runs over, grabs the victim by the arms, can't pull him up fast enough, train blasts victim, samaritan pulled into the chaos only to get churned between the wall and the train decorating the tunnel for the next 500 yards

Sure this could have happened. It's equally as likely that someone could have pulled him up to safety or, upon realizing there was no hope, let go of the man's hand at the last minute if it came to that.
We can talk scenarios all day long. I guess that's why no one would help. All of the unknowns prevent people (scare people) from helping anymore.
However, there are people who risk everything to help others...case in point - first responders and average citizens during 9-11. Military.
Don't tell me that "average heroes" or good samaritans no longer exist. We hear or read about them every day.
Unfortunately for this poor guy, no one in that subway was a hero that day (except for him).

Sorry - But it would take me far less time to react and involve myself in that situation. I can honestly say that I've either saved a life or saved a person from grievous injury on more than one occasion and it took less than a few seconds to decide to involve myself. Responding correctly when a life is on the line is a component of situational awareness which I believe a great majority of people in general just do not have.
Call me sanctimonious.
