Take it after or before, it doesn't really fricking matter. It takes hours to digest your food and have those nutrients transported to where they need to go.

It's comments like this that make me come back to the OT for more.

Post cardio, your best bet is to eat whole foods that contain protien and carbs, not just a protein shake. But, to simplify things if you wanted to drink your recovery think of something with a carb/protein ratio similar to chocolate milk.

You don't need alot of protein after cardio. Well, I'll argue you don't ever need alot of protein, but after cardio, there is really no benefit.

All you really need to "recover" after about an hour of cardio is a glass of chocolate milk, then make sure you eat something (non processed) within an hour and a half or so.

Are you a personal trainer or some shit? That is a lot of working out. Who has the fricking time for that? Are you trolling us?

About the calorie intake, if you are doing that much exercise everyday, then you should be consuming a ton of calories. Most people have sedentary jobs and don't exert so much energy each day.

There's going to be a ton of bro science in this thread. It doesn't really matter if you have a protein shake before/after as long as it doesn't affect your workout.

Bottom line is do what works for you. Have a solid diet, workout routine, and bust your ass.

As far as protein...1g per lb is plenty. I'm sure you could even go less than that and be fine.

You do realize he is asking about cardio right. Not just "working out".

What you have pre and post run does make a difference. Drinking a shake that was say 30g of protein and 7 carbs pre cardio and 7g protein and 30g carbs post cardio will have a different effect than the same "meals" in reverse.

One of the many benefits of being an OT Baller

on a serious note about 10 years ago i had got up to 250. there were reasons, mainly starting my business which now allows me to work from home thus living off 1 dollar pizzas and noodles for 2 years, but still. I told myself i would never, ever let myself get out of shape again.

It's to the point now i don't even think about it.

the ridiculousness is unphathomable. he's doing every rep of every set at 90% his max

if 100 lbs was your max on a particuluar workout (the amount you can just barely get up ONE time), is it even humanly possible to do 90 lbs 5 times for 5 sets for a total of 25 times?

re: OT fitness gurus: protein shake before/after cardio?

I'm not. i never said i was.

my first rep is at about half. my second is at about 80%. then i shoot for doing 90% max for the last 3. usually i can't. when i can i know it's time to add more weight.

like today on the dips i was able to get to my 5th set and like 2 reps on the 5th set before i just couldn't do another. so next time i will keep that as my goal. when i actually hit it i know it's time to add weight.

if that makes sense.

and as far as the time, if i am in the gym for more than 2 hours, im' playing around. between the gym/weights, the bike and the pool i'm usually out in 1:45. one of the benefits of going to the gym int the morning is no one else is lifting weights so i can set up all ys tations so i'm not wasting time between woorkouts

with the notable execption of squats. squats i actually do superset 20 on my last set but i only do 4 sets. and i'm so tired i can't work out the next day.

but yea, when you crawfished and said half, 80%, etc...that's much more reasonable.

re: OT fitness gurus: protein shake before/after cardio?

well most gym people knew what 90% max ment. that's fricking common sense. it's what you aim for it's not what you can do.

you're looking at it as someone whose doing reps. i'm not doing reps i'm doing 5x5.

i don't know what your hard on is about. my entire point of the post was simply to state, you are losing the forest in the trees if you are working out fasted. you aren't going to get as good of a workout.. you aren't going to get as good afterburn beucase you didn't push yourself as hard beucase you didn't have the energy to.

take whatever you have to take to get the best workout you can, if it means drink a Powerade or eat some cheap carbs do it, if you work out hard enough you will more than make up the difference in the afterburn. that's all i am trying to say. not trying to get into a pissing match

and for those of you who don't understand what afterburn is, your heart rate is accelerated after a workout, the harder you work out, the logner your heart rate is accelerated, the longer it's acceslerated, the more cals you burn even after you are working out. the harder the workout the better the after burn.

Out of curiousity why are you doing 5x5s ( a mass building workout ) and then cardio 45-60 min? I understand you want to lose weight but 5x5s are not suited for someone that wants to, plus doing that stenuous of a carido workout after a mass building workout negates the intentions of 5x5s. IMO you would be better suited doing high reps if you are going to do intense cardio, for that period of time, right after your workout.

re: OT fitness gurus: protein shake before/after cardio?

actually i'm no ttrying to lose weight, i'm 5'8 169 1/2.

I do 5x5 beucase i am trying to keep the muscle i have. i don't want to get any smaller than i am.

if i were trying to gain muscle i would eat more. avg day i take in about 3500-3700 cals. i burn half that in the gym afterburn. if i wanted to gain weight i would be eating about 4600 cals a day, i would cut the HIIT and reduce the LIIT.

the cardio is to keep the fat off. i go on dates/out toe at a few times a week. have to keep my girlish figure.

ive been doing this since i was 23 and i'm 29 and a half i'm in maintenance mode basically.

I don't think you know what you are talking about. If you are working out in the mornings, you are essentially working out fasted. There are benefits to fasting. I only use it if I'm on a serious cut due to my love for breakfast

My numbers aren't impacted when I work out fasted if I'm getting enough calories throughout the day. I take some caffeine and some BCAA's before and I'm completely fine

while that is true for hitt style training, post workout it shouldn't take very long for your heart rate to recover. I'm perfectly capable of pushing myself to the edge and past it whether I'm in a fasted state or not.

I'm having gym withdrawels. haven't been in 2 weeks because of shoulder issues + finals

Not too difficult.

I'm usually doing 4-6 reps of my 90% max for 3 sets on most days.

he should have stated it better. He isn't doing 5x5 of 90%, he's doing 50%, 75%, then 3 sets of probaly 3, 2, 1
