Do you not have conversations or social interaction? Seriously, this is a simple, natural topic of conversation. I don't know why it's hard. You seem to want to break down even the simplest of actions into some sort of formula.

And, I would be finding out what a guy does for a living really quick. When I was younger, I wouldn't have been too concerned, but a whole different story as you get older.

No talking about political views right away. Much too personal. Actually, I think it is rude to ask someone you barely know his political affiliation.
Asking what someone does for a living shows interest in that person and is just a natural topic of conversation.
