Yes, they can't refuse it, can't charge to handle it and can't require a family member to be there when its delivered but good sense on everyone part is to be there when they unload it.

This is not completely true, you can by merchandise online and funeral home can't charge handling fees. But to sell caskets only and offer no other services, you must have a funeral directors license and be a license funeral establishment.
Why?

That just changed. The Monks of St. Joseph Abbey in St. Benedict (Covington) Louisiana just won an appeal in Federal court allowing them to sell caskets for use in Louisiana. In the last 20 years, they sold a few of their hand built caskets to various priests and benefactors who wanted simple boxes, instead of the things the funeral directors sell. There's a law, in the State of Louisiana, that states that only licensed funeral directors may sell caskets. They took the Abbey to Federal court and won an injunction against the Abbey. Now this is only for Louisiana, they still do a good business with folks in Mississippi. A recent appeal, however, overturned the original decisions allowing the Abbey to again sell caskets to Louisiana residents/deceased.

Well I knew they were arguing that. I just didn't know it's settled. Interesting. Still I have a respect for the funeral industry and at least the directors I've dealt with. All professional people. As I said there is a business side to someone dying and if you are the one in charge of taking care of it, you have to keep a level head.

When we buried my mother and a few months later my sister, we didn't have to pay anything. They took the life insurance info, verified it and voila...funeral. Resthaven has a menu so to speak, of services and costs associated and you pick the options you want. Pretty straight forward. and they did an EXCELLENT job.

This menu is called a General Price List (GPL). Funeral directors are require to present and discuss GPL as soon as cost becomes part of conversation.

We buried my dad in 2010 at Resthaven in BR.When the FD gave my mom the total,a little over 8k,she said she didnt have it.He said that they couldnt help her then.It was a holiday and there was no way to verify life ins.My wife and I ended up putting it on our visa. The FD said there alot of folks that say that they dont have the money. They somehow always come up with it though.
