not necessarily, in the old days they called them kept women. Some times they even had children, but there was no formal marriage, and heck sometimes they didn't even live together.
And the relationship could be ended at any time by either party, with no need for a divorce, just a simple "this transaction is over" and move on.

One of the girls I knew had a 4800 square foot house in Metairie, a 3 bedroom 2-story condo in the D.H. Holmes lofts, a 2 bedroom condo on the beach in Destin... 2 AMG Mercedes Coupes (1 black standard and a white convertible).
She had a lunchtime guy, a during the week dinner guy, a weekend guy and one or two couple time a year guys... Plus she'd subcontract out a lot of the dirty work.
ETA:
She also had a couple platinum cards in her name that she didn't pay the bills on.

which works out great for the guy because he still has his income. The woman is out on the street with kids to pay for. I personally, would not choose this arrangement for myself. If it works for others, then so be it. I will always be able to pay my own way regardless of how much money my SO has.

The key is to acquire things of value that can be sold off when the relationship is over to create a cushion/nest egg/college fund.
The woman mentioned above has since retired with 2 kids and is living comfortably at the age of 36.
