Natchitoches, LA has that same kinda feel to it. So does Natchez, MS in a lot of parts.
Yeah, but they choose to keep parts of it historical.

Once more, that downtown would have been filled with people in the 1950s People are saying "stuck in the past" to describe towns that are depressed -- that is, stuck in the present

That's just the picture, the locals are out and about on a normal day.
So what's the problem? It doesn't have wonderful Big Box architecture?

No joke. It looks like they hadn't built anything there since Jerry Lee Lewis first hit the charts.

I grew up in one. Greenwood, MS. Also in Indianola. Huge downtown areas from the early 1900's. Huge old Antebellum mansions still there where all the rich farmers, lawyers, etc live in. Still basically segregated...all the white kids go to private schools, black kids to public. Walk in a more upscale restaurant and white people will mostly sit on one side, blacks on the other. The farmers are extremely wealthy landowners owning thousands of acres that have been in the family since the 1800s. I know of some whose workers are the descendants of sharecroppers or even slaves that worked on the same farm. They always say the delta is the most Southern place on earth existing today and it's like a time warp. The above are shacks that you can rent to stay the night. Located on an old cotton plantation

Call Houma the land that time forgot. People act like they are exempt from certain ways of acting in public.

Lived up there for ~3 months, and used to drive through town pretty regularly with classmates. We drove through the center part of town by the McDonalds one day, and there was a biker guy standing in the middle of the intersection with crotchless, assless chaps and a leather vest swinging around a chain. We sat there through 3 red lights watching him
