re: What is a "rich" person fair share?

Obama is turning "The Wealth" into the new minority that gets blamed for all that's wrong with the country. Reminds me of Karl Marx and his "dictatorship of the bourgeoisie".

Even if Obama gets his "Wealth Tax" it's on a drop in the bucket as far as a balanced budget goes. Passing the tax will only decrease the annual deficit spending by $16 on every $130 of deficit spending.
So what do we do to come up with the other 88%?

The rich already pay most of the taxes so the unemployed and lazy people can live! What exactly is their fair share!

To a DEM - if a worker has more money than a lazy person who 'prefers' not to work, then that worker is 'rich' and must give away as much of his money as the lazy person wants.

If anyone wishes to debate that this is the current trend of the DEM party, let them speak up with a counter argument - based on facts about their actions in the past five years - supporting a DEM agenda showing the DEMs are NOT pursuing such an outcome.

It's funny to me that everyone on here sticks up for the 1% while the vast majority of people aren't in it.

Maybe because when they confiscate from the 1% they will then need to look elsewhere for more, that is the middle class.

That is because I don't base what is right or wrong by social standing.

Politically I think the R will cave and jack up the rate by like 3% in the end. I wouldn't be against that as long as they also so cut spending a significant amount and get the country's fiscal house in order.

Hence the 1%

It is not too difficult to be in the top 10% though.
100k-150K = 9.89% and that is not a ton of money.

Has nothing to do with it.

That 1% in many ways represents the American Dream.

Everyone wants their chance at the American Dream.
Everyone wants the right to pursue it.
America is historically unique in providing all comers that shot at success.

Elsewhere in the world, aristocracy seeks to mitigate upward mobility.

The US is not traditionally of that mindset. Here it isn't so much a matter of sticking up for the 1% as it is the possibility of joining it. That possibility forms basis for the great dynamo electrifying American exceptionalism.

If there is an us-and-them class problem at the upper end though, perhaps it resides with the 0.01%, mainly Democrats, who seek a Drawbridge strategy. i.e., "We've made it past the moat to the Castle! Now raise the Drawbridge so others can't follow."

The rich pay more in taxes a year then some of us will make a lifetime and they give a lot to charity! I think they do enough already!

You're even, sort of, buying into the left's mindset, and just accepting their false premise - adjustments in marginal rates do not appreciably alter the percentage of the economy extracted, which has historically averaged about 18.5% of GDP. The only thing that has demonstrably been proven to increase federal tax receipts is to increase the GDP.

Adjusting the upper marginal rates will do little - the upper income earners just alter their behavior to legally avoid most of the increases. Unfortunately, it tends to redirect it to non-productive sectors of the society.

That's why lowering marginal rates works to increase receipts - it is not even counter-intuitive - when upper marginal rates are low, what do upper income earners do with that money? They consume and invest with the intent to make more money - thus expanding the economy.

It's not that complicated. Raising the upper marginal rates is purely class warfare so the left gets credit for "sticking" it to the rich. Because it has a depressive effect on the economy, it also makes everybody less well off (except those people who are on the guaranteed government dole).
