Neil Peart is a great percussionist, but no where near the drummer that Danny is....

I agree.

Peart is very rigid and stiff with his playing. He's on time and can play great off time stuff, but I find his style to have zero emotion in it.

I can not believe I am the only one to mention Buddy Harman. He played on more hit albums than anyone ever. He has played for Elvis, Beatles, Hank, Willie, Waylon, Jerry Lee, Stones, etc.... His list is huge.

É quil li qua. People jump my shite all the time, but the guy is an automaton. Not rigid or stiff, simply soulless. He can play, man can he play, but his play just doesn´t sound all there.

Him and Mike Portnoy are the two best out there.

What constitutes as "best"? Portnoy has skill, no question about that, but his stuff does not impress me compared to someone who has soul and "the groove". Playing drums fast is not very impressive to me.

Here is a drummer with soul:
Steve & Bennie -- funky arse beat
SJ
Steve Jordan and John Mayer. hotel room jam session
SJ and Bennie Worrell

But I laugh when people say "he's the best drummer ever!!!"

You responded to people who listed him among their "favorite 5 drummers." It just came across as very pretentious. He is clearly among the very upper echelon of drummers, and I think it's disingenuous to proclaim otherwise.

I certainly consider both among the best. It's just hard to name 5.

Yeah, it was about whom you like. Topper Headon is no machine, in my case, but I really, really like his sound.

Gotta give a shout out to Gene Krupa, the professor, Buddy Rich, alot of people who don´t come to mind as quickly, as I´m still P.O.´d about my Dawgs.

ah, gotcha. I use similar terms for guitarists- tone & technique. Some blow ya away with tone, others technique. The HOFers to me are the one who get both at elite levels.

Similarly we're aiming for best drum sound here, not technical proficiency, right?

In that realm I'd add Buddy Miles. He wasn't a fireball but his sound was one of the most identifiable IMO.

How bout a little love for Mitch Mitchell too? Was there ever a better suited guitarist & drummer than those two together? His jazz background and ability to lead the way was perfect for JH's improvisations. See 1983, Third Stone from the Sun, etc

Don't remember anyone saying Terry Bozzio. He's HOF IMO. Has played with a ton of people from Jeff Beck to Korn. Most well known for work with Zappa. He has impeccable taste in tailoring his style to the artist or song.

I remember Bozzio from the ´What are Words Worth?´ days. I remember liking his style then, solid, but maybe a bit like Peart (mechanical), hence I forgot about him.

Good call though, I get your point.

Ah, Woody Woodmansey had a GREAT sound as well. Tight, and a great sound.
