The others aren't really the same, especially deaf and blind.

I never say that either.. just a waste of time. Why use 7 syllables to say the same thing you can say with 1? (Black)

That's one perception. But when that perception becomes the mass perception, that will change like everything else. I'd be willing to bet that most "offensive" terms that are in use today used to be labeled something else previously. Words change. And they change based on the usage/intent of them. And you can't stop people from THINKING of X, Y, Z problems or issues the way they want to. ULTIMATELY, my point is... can't we just pick a damn word and stick with it, and stop folding to the social pressure of CHANGING the arrangement of letters we call X,Y,Z like a bunch of sensitive crybabys?

But they attend "So and So School for the Deaf" or "So and So School for the Blind." You would think they would change the names of the institutions if the were not PC.

My buddy dated a deaf chick for a couple of weeks and the best thing that ever came out of that was me finding about the website where someone would call the other person and read to them what you typed. It was always fun having a guy make sexy talk to random Tebows

I think a lot of people in any given group don't really take offense at the use of a word or the meaning of the word per se (unless it something outright offensive like the N-word). What they are really reacting to is the perpetual marginalization of their group that the word represents. The continued use of the word reminds them that they are somehow not wholly accepted into society and they feel that by shutting down the word they are removing an obstacle to their integration into society as a whole.

Well said. I suppose it's all about the intent that the word is used, of course. Over time, a word like "retarded" gets used so often in a derogatory way that people's perception OF that word changes, so that IF you are using the word it is almost impossible that you mean it without ill-intent. So, the word(s) must change, because if you use the old form it must mean that you are using it against its intended use. still... can't we just all agree that the issue remains the same, and that changing the word won't stop people from butchering it? let's give being REAL a shot for a while and see what happens!

It's a nice thought in theory. But it is human nature to take offense at things, or to be bothered by things. Some people let it roll off their backs. Some people start fights. Some people hold grudges and get passive aggressive. And some people try to advocate for themselves and their particular group to change attitudes and perceptions. These are the people that have setup the PC culture, and while I may not always agree with them, I cannot really blame them. Ultimately, you cannot control how people react to speech, no matter how benign you think it may be. Personally I try to recognize that I have my own points of contention and pet peeves that other people are likely not to understand. While I don't try to force them to respect my boundaries, I certainly appreciate it when they do. Consequently, I usually try to respect other people's boundaries even if I may not understand or relate to them. I don't feel like that approach has in anyway diminished my own quality of life, but it has certainly at least made other people's lives a little less uncomfortable, so I see no reason not to follow it. But that is just my opinion.

I never understood Negro, colored, black, then African, and now my EO brief (witch was giving by a black woman) tells me that "Negro" is not racist but the correct term

two of my very close friends have retarded brothers, and both of them when they first met me (when i first used that word around them) looked me dead in the face and said "my brother is retarded," ... HOW unlikely is that??? but both of them were TOTALLY messing with me and letting me stew in it for about 5 seconds. i found their joke on me totally appropriate and comfortable. by the second time, i realized i was being f'ked with, but the first time was rough. it's just a simple word, and it's not worth being too upset about, unless you're outright making fun of someone for a short-coming. and honestly, i think most people here are grown up enough to admit that they have all done that at some point. c'est la vie.
